Bow Valley College - Part time

Hi there,

I have been snooping the last few weeks and can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for in the posts, so I do apologize if this has already been touched upon.

I am thinking of doing the Bow Valley College part time program (I am a mom of two, working full time, with a very supportive husband....but giving up my full time job right now is not an option). I have been on the BVC website and the part time program states it is 8 semesters long at 2 yrs 9 mos. Now, is this 2yrs 9mos straight through? Also, any nursing student moms out there doing the part time school thing and working full time. I do have great vaca/flex at my job now so hopefully once I do get accepted I will take advantage of that to use for study here and there but I'm also not lull to the fact that this is going to take alot of hard work on my part (and a ton of organization and structure). But I've had this passion for as long as I can remember and am prepared for it all!!

Only Bow Valley can tell you how their part time programme is laid out. The figure seems a litle bit optimistic because the full time programme is two years and a bit.

You also need to understand that the time you spend on hospital units are set by the school and not you. The clinical times are for two - six weeks at a time and cannot be deferred. You must pass the required section in order to advance to the next semester of classes.

Can you really not afford to take a student loan and bite the bullet and do it full time?

Yes, I'll call BVC and see but wanted to also get some advice from someone who has completed the part time studies.

Hospital units/clinicals: understood

Full time: not an option, and I really don't mind doing the part time either. Will take a bit more time but we're prepared for that.

I currently go to Bow Valley College, though I am a full time student. As far as I know, the program is indeed 2 years and 9 months straight, though I don't think you have to necessarily take it that way. My program is two years full time and it is all the way through the year. The full time is almost impossible to do if you have a job as well, in fact they tell you to quit any job you may have in the orientation week (full time is 6-7 classes a semester and believe me they are jam packed with work and papers and all that!). So, part time is a good option for working moms. A friend of mine is in the part time program and she thinks it is fantastic. The classes are all evening classes on certain days (not every single day!) and she just loves it. She has two boys at home and obviously can't afford to take time off for schooling either! Bow Valley is also really quite helpful and sympathetic to people's situations.

Hey Mcgrace,

I too am considering attending BVC next year. I am in a BN program right now but the part time delivery of the LPN program would suit my life right now so much better. I just wanted to ask a couple things myself as well. I am wanting to attend BVC because I could then work in a part time contracted job while I go to school but is it a guarentee that the courses will be in the evenings? (and how early or late do the clases start in the PM?) I know for the final professional practice I would not be able to work and would need to fully commit to that schedule but what about clinicals? Do you know of anybody being able to complete them during july-august? I know they are 4-8 weeks long and if i could do them in the summers that would be perfect but I am not sure if i can count on that. I have to decide soon if I am staying in the program I am in or transfering.

The clinical time is always determined by the school. It is very rare to get a batch of students over the summer. In the last decade I don't remember ever seeing them. Staffing levels go down then and ORs are often closed so hospitals don't really take students.
