Boston Direct Entry Masters and DNP 2020

Published

Thought I would create a topic for this application cycle. I made one for both DNP and Masters since DNP applicants are considered for the Master's program as well. I assume that means they sometimes defer people to the Master's if they feel that they are not a good fit for the DNP program

@klnurse other programs are right around the price range too! And awesome, I’ll be going as well! What speciality are you in?

@KRF I haven’t heard yet ?

I’ll be going to accepted students day! I’m in the adult primary specialty. I think I’m going to chose BC and am exited to begin!! Anyone else committing??

I'm in FNP ? what about you?

@klnurse PNP! I heard that FNP and PNP have a decent amount of overlap for classes in the first year of the masters program!

Thanks for responding!! This is exactly what I was thinking. My main concern about BC is the cost. Financial aid letters are not sent until April, so it seems so risky to accept without knowing if I will be able to afford the program. MGH offered a Scholarship, so I know that I would definitely be able to afford their program, but if I chose to pursue my DNP after, the cost of the DNP program would pretty much cancel out the scholarship. I’m hoping to be more sure about my decision after attending BC’s accepted students day!

Keep in mind that a lot of hospitals or other employers might pay for or supplement your DNP if you choose to get it later. Further, you could pursue the nurse faculty loan forgiveness program if you are getting your DNP to teach.

Hey y'all, I called in today to see if I could get an estimated cost of the program and they emailed me the sheet that I've attached here. Includes tuition, health insurance, fees, and estimated living expenses (rent, food, etc.)

Hope this helps anyone who can't make it to admitted students day, or who have to decide before then for another school!

Hi all!
Very excited to be accepted to adult-gero DNP! I am just wondering if anyone has any information on the schedule for this program. In addition, does anyone know if the pathophysiology prerequisite can be taken after you are enrolled in the program? Or must it be completed before the program begins in June ?

Hi! Look at Portage Learning. BC accepts online classes and it’s very affordable. I took pathophysiology on it!

Hi all,

Would some of those admitted mind posting your stats? GPA, GRE, certs, etc...

I have 3.97 GPA and scored in the 98th percentile for writing, 52nd for quantitative reasoning and 63rd for verbal reasoning. Hope this helps!

Are any of you guys deciding between the DNP program at BC and MSN programs at other schools? I’m leaning towards BC mainly because the DNP is a terminal degree, but I’m not actually sure how much that will mean to employers after graduation. I’d definitely appreciate if you guys have any advice!! I’m deciding between BC and MGH if that’s important.

I’m making the same decision! Ultimately, I think I will go with BC because you aren’t awarded your RN and MSNP at MGH until you graduate - you’re locked in for three years. BC you can choose to stop after your RN, there’s more flexibility! Financially, BC makes more sense scholarship wise for me too. BC is an amazing place! Are you going to accepted students day?

I agree! I'm definitely leaning toward BC vs. an MSN program because of this. I am also looking to get my DNP eventually and figured this program would be the most efficient and cost-effective way.

I think the only thing holding me back right now is that I don't know much about BC it self. I can kind of tell that the resources provided at this school aren't as much as say, UPenn or Yale, but I hope to learn more at admitted students day. I also want to know more about what Connell SON's culture is like...do students in this program have good relationships with each other and the faculty? Is the faculty and student population diverse? If anyone can answer these for me I would appreciate it ?

Current BC student here! I think Boston provides as many resources-and has access to so may amazing hospitals. I can speak to the culture of BC as being amazing and truly service based. The people here are so different from other schools. It’s an awesome place! You’ll definitely see that at accepted students day ?

You get your rn after the first part of the program at MGH not after the 3 full years. A coworker of mine recently finished their program and she decided to work as an rn and finish the master portion part time

I misspoke! You do get your RN. What I meant was you don’t get the BSN. So you aren’t conferred your degree until the end of the program. I just emailed them to confirm and that’s what they said. BSN and MSN you don’t receive until the end of the three years. So yes you can work as an RN before, but you won’t have the BSN degree. Also, only 10% of the DEN class is allowed to work part time, so I don’t think it’s too common to do what your friend did. But that’s awesome she was able to work and complete the program?
