Borrowing medication from different patients

New grad working in ltc. I've notice that during med passes, if the pt does not have the prescribed med, they are "borrowed" from another patient (particularly narcs) and then documented in narc book as "wasted"... seems weird to me, and it makes me a little uncomfortable..my nurse educator said its "perfectly" legal.. is this common practice in LTC's?

Find the policy manual, and see if it says something about 'borrowing'. No?? Ask the educator to write one to cover these situations!!!

Your facility should have an emergency box for meds. Us that if you don't have them meds. Best way to make sure you have the meds is to make sure they are ordered or re ordered. If you are regular staff, check your cart on a regular basis and re order the meds.

Specializes in LTC (LPN-RN).

Hopefully that educator was reported for that.
