Kathy White's Fast Facts for Adult Critical care is great. It's small, and has just about everything you'll need. I recommend getting the additional IABP & CV Surgery inserts- they're very useful, especially if you plan on eventually taking balloon pumps & fresh hearts.
Good luck to you in your new job!
I was A new grad into ICU two years ago, and have since trained into the CVICU, I use Bojar's manual of perioperative care in adult cardiac surgery, fouth addition. If you are looking for a complete cardiac ref. this is it. it is detailed enough for physician/ PA as well as for RNs. I swear by it.

Bojar is the best book I have EVER read hands down. I recently talked my director in to supplying it for all new employees. I read it everyday just as a refreasher. In my opinion, Kathy whites book is something that people usually buy and then end up not using. It is full of cards with info that is great at times, but books such as Bojar's explains theory behind what we do. Another excellent book is The ICU BOOK by morino. I would recommend both.
some that i like are:
[color=#003399]cardiothoracic surgical nursing by carl margerson and jillian riley
[color=#003399]churchill's pocketbook of intensive care (churchill pocketbooks) by simon m. whiteley, andrew bodenham, and mark c. bellamy
[color=#003399]intensive care nursing by philip woodrow
aacn essentials of critical care nursing (paperback)
by [color=#003399]marianne chulay (author), [color=#003399]suzanne m. burns (author), [color=#003399]american association of critical-care nurses (aacn)
would be worth having a flick though before buying any, i think on the amazon website you can sometimes look through the books.
enjoy!

Me TOO!! I am forever "bringing out my book"
Plus I have a general ICU reference book that is little bitty. Lots of people I work with use the Kathy White Book and love it. It's just not my style.

I am a recent grad and a GN working in a CV-ICU/CCU. I am enjoying it so far, though it does hold its challenges (of course)! Anyhow, I was looking for any recommendations for a critical care book that would be helpful to keep with me while at work? Thank you so much!
