BOLC June 2014

Hello all! I have been browsing threads to see who's headed for BOLC 2014 possibly June. No orders yet. Still waiting for the "phone call", my recruiter says it may take "2 weeks to 2 mos". I was commissioned (took an oath) Jan, 14th :). HOOAH! Also, are you going to Pre-BOLC? I am interested, I mentioned it to my recruiter and he just dismissed me. No prior military background/experience. I have been an RN for nearly 3 years. Currently working at a 25 bed Critical Access Hospital as a M/S Nurse. Still working on my APFT.

I was there as part of operational training and thankfully never needed medical attention so I know nothing of the hospital there. If you have family there in Southern CA then it may be okay. There are significant PhilAm communities throughout the region as well. As for remote. It is desert remote not jungle remote. I need a little humidity in my life and that dry heat is tough on my lungs and nose.

At least you'll make an informed decision.

Congratulations and good luck.

Thanks everyone. We are going to Fort Irwin :).

Our compound here is roughly the size of a Walmart parking lot with no outdoor running area, and the ground is unforgiving gravel covered in snow and ice right now. So treadmill it is!

I must have done 500 miles in tiny circles around a flight line covered in softball sized gravel...it was soooo much better with the snow on the ground, because at least it became a semi-even surface. It's amazin' what you'll put up with to stay sane.

ArmyMomRN2014:

If you're just doing set distance runs: 2mi, 3mi, etc; at a constant pace, try changing it up a bit by adding some speed training...not necessarily to get a killer time, but to increase your cardio: What's the Difference Between Fartlek, Tempo, and Interval Runs? | Runner's World

Also by breaking up your training, you'll reduce the chance of repetitive stress injury and allow for a bit more downtime (given that your interval sessions will be shorter, though more intense). Yoga is a great tool for stretching & strengthening while you relax.

They may run you a bit longer, but they won't do it to try to break you, only to make sure you have some heart. ALWAYS finish stronger than when you started, so you'll remember you've got more inside you than you think...and you'll fight that little voice that tells you it's ok to slow down. Train the mind, while you train the body. Good luck.

Meant Rocky S2V. Been wearing them so long I forgot their name.

Wearing mine into the ground...worth a $1000 going through Air Assault...I think I was the only guy in the bay without a blister. I just wish you could resole them. :(

Neither, Reserves...Ft Couch. I drill at a local MSU. The dining facility isn't always well stocked, but there's never a line for the movies.

I spend a fair amount of time at Ft Couch myself. LOL

It's not a bad place. Allows me to finish the BSN and then do the active duty remix.

Hi Guys, I am just finishing up my BSN degree and will be graduating next weekend. I was enlisted and will be a 2LT upon entering BOLC. I have a 2 year old daughter and my husband recently asked for a divorce. Do you know if it will affect my BOLC date? I dont know if it will even effect my career. Do you know any single parent nurses in the military? If so how are they able to balance an army nursing career and motherhood? I am in a really dark place right now as i owe the military a few years, which i will gladly serve, but i cannot give up my rights for my child as being a mother is just as important as being a soldier.I have been looking all over for information on here and cannot find any recent post for single parent nursing.

Your main issue will be to provide the Army with a Family Care Plan. The father will be the domiciliary parent in such case that you are deployed. Presuming of course that you are the domiciliary parent in the judgement. Other than your commitment to the Army to not make your status as a single parent a problem for the Army, they don't care.

This was my experience as a divorced father of two girls.

Whatever you do moving forward it is important to remember that making sure your daughter has the opportunity for a good relationship with her dad is more important than any pain you feel over this divorce. I only say this because it is often a challenge for me to keep this perspective. Good luck to you and your little girl.

I have no intentions of keeping her away from her father. I am aware that it is important for her to have a positive relationship with her father. I have been in the military for 8 years and I know how leadership feels about issues with childcare and single parents. I just wanted the perspective of someone actually working in the nursing field in the army and how they are doing it. Thanks for your reply pulsenessNine. We have agreed on custody and right now he is not stable and she will be with a family member while I am at BOLC.
