hi im currently in the liberal arts major so i could able to pass my preclinicals which are only two classes i have left. the problem i am having is that now i cant get into the nursing program because i have a C in one of my english classes and then tells me why dont i go into the field of EMT or respiratory therapist. when the counselor told me this i felt so confused because at the beginning of the semester i was told by another counselor that i just need to pass the pre clinicals to then apply for the nursing department . now i am thinking about what to do and i have no idea anyone here knows the steps to transfer to another college that will not make me wait so long in order for me to get into the program. it would be greatly appreciated.

First off - it sounds like one of two things happened. Either you're getting conflicting information, in which case you need to go directly to the nursing school/dept/whatever's admissions people and find out directly what's going on, or the first person you talked to did not actually look at your grades or overall GPA and merely gave you advise about coursework you needed to complete.

Secondly, after reading your post I can see why you got low marks in English. Perhaps you should take another composition class for your own benefit, let alone to increase your GPA and make up for the previous class with the poor grade.

Further, being an EMT isn't so bad, and there are Paramedic-to-RN bridge programs out there. That said, EMT-B base pay is horrible and you will barely make enough to feed yourself, let alone pay off loans, for a while until you can get some raises due to experience.

Lastly, this forum is the last place you should be asking for transfer information. Go call up the schools you're looking at, make sure they will accept you in the first place, and then ask them what they need from you to transfer. They get paid good money from your future tuition to answer such questions.

THESQUIRE:

if my english seems bad to you im sorry but you have not spoken to me personally. when i posted that bulletin i was at work and was in a rush. the professor that taught me english that semester was a tough grader and only about 5 people passed the class that semester. i was only asking for advice and looking to be insulted by anyone. by the way i have often been to hospitals and there are plenty of nurses with heavy accents. i was just looking for some advice

What I said had nothing to do with accents. However, by thinking that after reading what I wrote you merely reinforce my point.

i do not get it why do you insist on insulting me? when i was MERELY asking for advice. and i was refering to nurses that have accents because you are trying to insult me by saying "after reading your post I can see why you got low marks in English. Perhaps you should take another composition class for your own benefit, let alone to increase your GPA and make up for the previous class with the poor grade." i am fluent in English and i do not need to take any class for my own benefit. I repeat i was only asking for advice on what to do since i want to become a nurse and the college i attend is giving me a hard time. if you have anything else to say keep it to yourself because i thought this forum was for students and nurses to ask for advice if i'm wrong then i will find out for myself

Hmmm...how on earth did you think anyone was commenting on your spoken English (it never occurred to me that you had an accent? Holy extrapolation from v. little information Batman.

You need to ground your information. Ask someone to get you the admission requirements in writing. Then you can work out how to proceed. The thing is, if you want to be a nurse you will probably have to take the English class over again (if it really requires better than a C).

I am sorry if you think that the other poster was insulting you. Why couldn't it be that they simply thought your writing needed some work (that is how I read it). Nurses MUST be able to communicate very clearly in writing -- so that advice was quite good. Imagine you have to do a lot of charting, once you become a nurse, you will need to be fast and accurate.

If you want to be a nurse, and not an EMT or respiratory therapist, please don't follow the suggestions from the counselor. You should really do what your passion is.

From my personal experience it is challenging to get into a nursing program at many schools. If a better grade in English would get you in that sounds like the most sound action. But first, since you're getting conflicting information from counselors (I also had that problem), you should go to the chair person of the nursing program to clarify.

If you need information on transferring, I've found that it's best to go to the school you plan to transfer to with your transcript. They will be able to tell you for sure what classes they accept and all other pertinent information in regards to getting into the nursing program.

From your post you mentioned that the first counselor said that you needed to take English to apply to the program. The other said that the C in English is holding you back. It sounds like English is needed to get into the program but the first counselor failed to mention that certain grades are needed in those preclinical classes, too. That really stinks that some of the information was omitted the first time. If your school offers mini semesters that would be an option. Or maybe they would accept an English class from a community college that offers mini semesters.

I hope you find the appropriate info and make it into the nursing program if that's your passion. Good luck :)
