I came across this article in my local paper today, and I'd like to hear from any of you that have done this at your hospital.

Were you pleased with this option? Do you think that this will eliminate agency nursing in the future?
Just curious.

I can't access the article, but there's been talk about it on the boards here. Try a search. Personally, I don't think it sounds like a very good idea. I don't think that it will do away with agency nursing - if things ever came to that I think many nurses who do not wish to work for hospitals (especially not full-time) would leave the field in droves - myself included.

Nor could I access the article. There is one facility in Wyoming that has gone to a bidding process for all open shifts. It was explained to us that anyone can bid on these assignments; agencies, employees of the facility. The idea to them is that they can get a better rate than what they have been paying. We were asked to participate. We declined. Nurses bidding for a shift is like Kobe Bryant bidding for a job as far as I am concerned.
I agree with RN4NICU in that a large majority of those who work agency will Once the depart in droves if this truly becomes the norm. In the end, this practice will hurt nursing and will result in a greater shortage of nurses willing to work.
By refusing to get involved in such a practice, nurses can work together to stop it before it does serious damage.

Interesting. I worked at Southern Regional for 8 years off and on and I know the nurse from the article. They are the reason that I am NOT working at the bedside right now, I was so stressed out by that place. I am not surprised that they would be the ones to turn to this type of staffing. They have little respect for nurses and having nurses compete to be the lowest bidder for the "honor" of working on one of their shifts is just the type of thing they would do.
