Well, here I am. I have been watching this board for some time. I am ready to come out of the closet and introduce myself. I have been a practicing Chiropractor for 9.5 years. My heart was always set for an M.D. but a problem with my back when I was 22 led me to this profession. Here I am at 35 y.o. looking to get the accelerated BSN (if possible....maybe the 2 year?) Throw myself into the ICU etc and going for it. Don't get me wrong, I like being a Chiropractor, I do. But we are very limited in what we do and I always wanted the hospital setting. Out of my mind you ask? No. Just realizing that you only have one life to live. Some in my family are having a hard time with the decision but others have been very supportive.
I am in the process of having all my transcripts and such sent to the schools around here. You should hear the advisors reaction when I tell them of what I am doing. Honestly, I really do not care what some people will say....even my colleagues. I have a twin sister who is also a Chiropractor who just thinks I am insane for wanting to go back for more schooling. I have a very supportive husband so I am thankful for that! It is not going to be easy......pulling alot of info back from 10 years ago but I have to because this is what I want to do.
SO, I guess you can ask the questions....I am sure I will get some! I am just hoping I don't have to sit around and wait to get into the schools. Does the accelerated versions have long wait times as well?

Where in Ohio do you live? Just curious...
I heard about long waiting list for some of the programs, but I do admire you for your decision! It's never too late. I give an example of my mother who came to the USA at the age of 59. Previously she was a doctor in Russia, never spoke English in her life. After 2 years of being here she got into medical assisstant program, finished it with 3.96 GPA and worked for ten years in a local hospital. Now she is retired, and basically she is the only supportive member of my family who constantly said "GO FOR IT!".
I understand how hard it will be for you to go back to school, plus the income you most likely to loose while in school...But it will all pay at the end.
Most people I know that applied to CRNA schools are non-traditional students:they are over 30 and have families. I make myown sacrifies too...If you want-PM me and we will talk.
GOOD LUCK to you.:pumpiron:

Check out the acclerated BSN program at UW-Oshkosh. It is very competitive to get into but does not have a long waiting list and only takes 12 months to get your BSN if you already have a BS in another field- plus it is mainly all online. It is the program I did and had a great experience with it!

not sure if you'd relocate... columbia has an accelerated program for individuals who already have a bachelor's degree who would like to return to school to receive a bachelor's in nursing. last year, 5 of these "ETP" students were accepted into the anesthesia program. They will graduate in May with their BSN, will work for one year in an ICU, then will return to their guaranteed 'seat' in the class for the following year. if you are interested: Columbia University in the City of New York. i think with your credentials you'd be a perfect fit for this kind of program. additionally, it is by far, the fastest route. you may even be able to do your ICU work back home in ohio. they have the security of knowing that they are already been accepted into the CRNA program

Actually I have heard of this before. I am doing the same thing right now. I practiced for 4 years in chiropractic and decided to switch to nursing. I am currently in a 15 month accelarated BSN program and getting ready to start my last semester in Jan. I am really happy that I made the transition. At first I was nervous that I made a bad decision but in the end I know I made the right decision. Chiropractic just wasn't for me. I have future plans of attending CRNA school but for right now I am just happy with what I am doing and look forward to working in the hospital. Feel free to pm me if you want any info about any nursing programs in Illinois or anything else.

Switching careers to nursing, is not unusual at all. There are a few people in our school that were chemical engineers, firefighters, nurse practitioners, health care administrators. Your different background in healthcare only serves as a stength in my opinion, unless you have a history of several careers. I know you live in ohio, but both michigan state and wayne state university both have accelerated BSN programs (12-15 months long), and I'm sire there is no wait list. In addition, michigan state's program is rather new so there would be a good chance of getting in. Wayne state, University of Detroit Mercy, University of Michigan-Flint, and Oakland University have anesthesia programs. Michigan State wants to start their anesthesia program in 2007 but does not have a director yet. Good luck with everything, and don't listen to the negativity.

Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, MI is starting an accelerated BSN program this year, I am a senior in their traditional BSN program right now and I love the school. Eastern also offers in-state tuition to Ohio residents. Good luck!

Wow, this is the program I am preparing for now! I am taking three pre-reqs this spring, getting my cna in summer, three more pre-reqs in fall and applying for the May 2008 cohort. Can we talk? I would love your insight into the process. I got my first BS online and loved the format (!!).
