as i approach graduation i was ranting and raving about some of the clinical rotations i have been through. anyone have any good stories? i don't really want to hear advice on how to get along with people or what to expect in the real world...i just thought it would be interesting to hear what other people have experienced. so far st v's was the very best experience. the staff there treated the students as if they were actually living, breathing people and included us in on actual nursing. the staff at ohsu acted like we were slime growing on the wall. my favorite was when i was charting there and the charge nurse took a moment to stop shoveling food in her mouth to bark "you, outta here, no students at the front desk" even though there were 5 computers open and the rn's were extremely busy leafing through people magazine.
thanks for the rant!

St V is St. Vincent's Hospital it is part of the Sisters of Providence. It is also has Magnet status. Here is a link http://www.providence.org/Oregon/facilities/hospitals/providence_st_vincent/
As for clinicals...it has been well over ten years since I have been thru them :imbar My best experience was actually at OHSU on the Cardiac Floor and worst was at Providence on the GI Surg floor....Keep in mind this was a loooooong time ago...

I have had a great experience at St. V's too. The nurses there actually like working with students and it makes such a difference to feel welcome and valued. A great learning environment. I love the computerized charting there too. Computers in all patient rooms make it very efficient for charting assessments, vitals and for medication administration.

My best clinical experiences were St. V's orthopedics floor (my first rotation in nursing school - 2006) and the cardiac ICU at Providence Portland Medical Center (2007). Worst clinical experience by a long shot was my pediatrics rotation at Doernbecher Children's Hospital at OHSU (2006) - I loved the facilities, the patient population, but the nursing staff was burned out and treated students like dirt.

My best experience is L&D at Good Sam. The nurses are busy and you do feel in the way sometimes but if you step up and ask questions they will explain things to you and seem to like having extra hands to help.
