Dear Nurse Beth,

I've been having issues with my manager for the past few months and have decided to seek employment at another hospital. I have an interview scheduled next week and would like advice on the best way to answer "Why are you leaving your current job/employer?" I don't want to come across as someone who can't get along with others or as someone who is insubordinate but the real reason is I can no longer work under my current manager and be happy at my job. What is the best strategy for this?

Dear Best Strategy,

You are wise to anticipate interview questions ahead of time and prepare your answers. Being prepared helps you to feel in control, and to bring your A game to the interview.

A good answer is along the lines of I'm looking to expand my nursing experience and have always wanted to work at this facility” or I'm looking for the best fit and I believe this is it”. By so doing, you immediately segue in a positive manner from the past to the present.

Never, ever say anything less than positive about a previous employer or boss. The code language is It wasn't a good fit”, said with a smile. Period.

Good luck on your interview! I hope it's a better work environment for you. Once you are in the right place and you are appreciated, you will flourish. You can then channel all your energy to your patients and coworkers instead of towards coping with toxic conditions.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth

Hers is an answer to this question that is well received: I am looking for a hospital that has a stronger emphasis on patient centered care
