Best Schedule for me?

Published

Hi, New here,:)

Can anyone pretty please help me? I am thinking on which kind of nurse I want to be, which I am thinking more on Neonatal, but whatever. I just like helping everyone. Esp. babies and mommies. I LOVE it! But, I am trying to figure out the schedule thing. I dont mind working, but I have three kids. (9, almost 6, and 4) I wonder do nurses work like three days on, three off, or work 5 days a week, or 7, do you HAVE to work night shift if ur a nurse? I just dont want to be stressed out only because of my schedule, ya know?lol I know, working in a Dr's office will be a different schedule than a hospital, but what is the pay difference average? I am also open to ANY ups, downs, pros, cons, etc, stories about nursing. I am ready to try my BEST to get in there and DO my best to help other people. I also want to be the best mommy I can be, and wife too. It is a hard balance to keep, I know. :) Thank you for your help in advance.

I have worked in hospitals for the last 9 years and I have had some of the craziest schedules but they were flexible to my needs. I am also a mother and a full time student, so I've worked 7 days on 10hr shifts and 7 days off. I've worked 3 12's and right now I just work 2 16's on Saturday and Sunday. Most hospital jobs are flexible and some go off of seniority. But truthfully, there is no bad schedule, just whatever meets your needs. And most hospitals have shift differential for 1st, 3rd and weekend shifts. Hope that helps

Yes, Thank you VERY much! It is a relief to know that I will probably be able to work the schedule thing to my needs and life, and not work more than live. If the hours are flexible, I can do them, even if they are long, lol. Not a problem. I will be happy if it is a career that I do not dread waking up and going to work! :) Bless you SO much!:heartbeat Thank you .

You work 16 hour shifts? I don't discount your ability to do that and still care for your patients properly, but its been proven that working long shifts like that does compromise care.

Working two 16 hour shift is just fine for me. It sounds really long but it goes by really fast. I am extremely methodical and double check myself for any mistakes that I may have made. But so far its been great, I've been working this schedule for the past two years. I dont advise it for everyone, but for me personally I have been able to go to school full time and still be involved with my daughters education and activities. The hospital that I work for has allowed me to do this and still retain all of the full time benefits. There is about 12 other employees that work this same schedule. Even though its only for two days a week, I get to spend alot of time with my patients in those two days since I am there for a three shifts.

Wow! I think that would sound good for me too! I can handle DEFINITELY working a few long days in order to have the rest of the time with my family. I would also like to spend more time with the patients at one time, like for a 2-3 day period. If I am understanding correctly what you said, lol. Yes, I like the sound of working 2-3 days on, and 2-3 off, or whatever that may be. I think I could handle that. I honestly think I would like working in a hospital better than a clinic. What do you think?:) I LOVE making a REAL difference in patient's lives, and being there when they reqally need me, and helping them survive major things, and know that someone is there to help and care for THEM. OH, I JUST CAN'T WAIT!!! lol
