Best Practice for Addicts in ER and Inpt

I am looking for best practice when it comes to addicts in the ER and in the hospital. What resources are you providing before discharge??

Well, my hospital is embracing it's inner city pride and looking to setting up a safe injection site for those with drug dependencies who are inpatients. Complete with nursing staff and narcan kits.

At the hospital I work at, there is no real plan no real offer of assistance. Treat and street. I guess I'm wondering what other hospitals are doing.

Specializes in Emergency Room, CEN, TCRN.

lol, ironically the advertisement that appeared in this thread on my browser was for "Simplist" brand ready-to-administer dilaudid syringes.

LOL...I saw that too. After the day I had one of those almost sounds appealing right about now.

My hospital is also treat and street with no offers of assistance or support for anyone who maybe wants to get help (which are very rare). I just had an AMA today who if I had to guess will be back since she also went AMA 3 days ago.

You could always get some fliers from your friendly neighborhood AA and NA groups--they'll be happy to provide them. The vast majority of your addict patients will just throw them away, but there is always the chance that someone might wander into a meeting if they know when and where to go.
