Best nursing schools in ontario/western new york?

Published

Hi everyone,

i am very interested in a career in nursing. However, i don't even know where to begin. I am from niagara falls canada and therefore am right next door to western new york! I was just curious as to what schools in these areas have the best nursing programs? I am currently enrolled at brock university. I am so confused with everything! Deciding on whether or not to pursue this career and figuring out how to do so has been quite a challenge! I need guidance :(

thanks in advance!

In Canada there really isn't such a thing as the "best" nursing school. From what I've seen over the years, it's the effort of the student that gives a quality education. There are programmes with unhappy students, it's true.

From what I've learnt reading the boards, Canada seems to have more control over it's nursing education than the US. I've never heard of a programme here been under review or schools being closed due to poor academic results.

Having said that, university in the US would be extremely expensive for you as a non-resident. The diploma courses that run in the US would not leave you prepared to work as an RN in Ontario and you would be required to "upgrade" your education by CNO upon return home.

Hi,

I'm currently taking nursing in NYS. I started out in Western NY at Alfred State and they have a really good program. I ended up transfering to a school in central NY after the first semester due to the location. It is more expensive as you would be an international student, but I always found Canadian Universities to be very expense as well. Most of the schools in NYS will transfer all of your Canadian courses with a C or better and you don't even have to have your transcripts evaluated which most other states require.

I am very surprised to hear that you don't have to have your transcripts evaluated. I would check into that further if I were you as the schools here in Ontario are quite firm that their requirements be met and they don't like to grant exemptions unless you come from a school that they are affiliated with.

In the past five years or so, the colleges are teamed with the universities in delivering nursing programs which

are called collaborative programs.

In regards to being licenced as a nurse in Ontario, unless you graduated in the early 80's and have a lot of work experience, you are required to have graduated with a BSN and pass the CRNE to practice as an RN in Ontario.
