Anyone know...? I'm really thinking about going into ICU... I'd like to know if anyone had input on some good hospitals to work for either in metro detroit or ann arbor that have a good culture ICU environment.
THANKS!:balloons:

Hi Iceyspots! I saw you are a nursing student. When you graduate your best bet for landing an ICU job is to apply for an ICU internship. I know Henry Ford and Beaumont offers these programs for new grads but there may be other hospitals that do the same. Speaking of Henry Ford, they do have nurse intern openings in their SICU from time to time. I would check in on that so you can start your ICU experience even before you graduate.

This may be blatantly obvious, but University of Michigan and St. Joe's-Ann Arbor both have excellent ICU's. (My wife says that the level of satisfaction is higher for the nurses @ UM) SJAA is undergoing a MASSIVE expansion project right now, so they may have some openings coming up. University of Michigan has an excellent benefits package, and they aren't shy about hiring new grads into the ICUs (for example, what I was told by a UM nurse recruiter, is if an ICU has 4 openings, they'll often hire 2 experienced RNs and 2 new grads). I HIGHLY recommend shadowing in the ICU unit at the facility you're interested in, possibly 2 or 3 times if they'll let you. That way, the staff gets to know you, and if you're really lucky, you can meet with the nurse manager who'll be doing the hiring and make a "first contact."
Which ICU are you interested in? Surgical, Thoracic, Neonate, Neuro, Trauma/Burn, Peds, Cardiac...? That in and of itself may have some bearing on what hospital you go to.

Henry Ford also has externships in the Neuro ICU, Caridac ICU and Medical critical care. Working at a larger teaching hospital you will see lots of interesting thing. Good luck. I highly recommend a externship while in nursing school.

Henry Ford Hospital does offer an ICU intern program for new grads, I also hear from a lot of experienced nurses that Harper Hospital, part of the DMC, has an excellent ICU there and their nurses are excellent at what they do and they are good teachers, quote on quote.

I work for Oakwood health system and love it.
Cool! I heard back from the nurse recruiter there and she was telling me that they are going to have openings for nurse externs in March. I'm calling for more details.. I was offered an externship for Saint John's in Detroit but I'm not too happy about the commute... (I'm near Ypsilanti).
I'm currently doing my clinical rotation at Oakwood so I'm already comfortable with the facility.
