I might have done PT if that had been an option at my school. Nursing was the only undergrad health sciences program at my school. They sold me on it as having so many different options that it would just as good as if not better than PT. I've since realized that I prefer dealing with only one patient at a time. I prefer having extended contact with my patients, seeing them over time and getting to know their issues. I like being able to share my skills and experience to help them with their needs. There are opportunities like that in nurisng, but most of them rely on the skills gained during years of working acute care. I tried acute care. I don't like going home every night wondering if I missed something really important because I was too busy to really be able to reflect on each patient and confirm that I did all I needed to do. In acute care, you have to take it task by task and frequently reassess and reprioritize. I admire those who do it well. I think we all can benefit from honing such skills. Still, I don't want a job where that experience is the basis of my being hired. So most of that array of opportunity for nurses isn't for me. I think PT would have suited me better but who knows for sure, right?
