Bergen Community College Nursing Program Question

Published

Last Thursday I was at the college for the purpose of collecting my Chemistry grade with some classmates. Apparently, there was a graduation ceremony for RN's going on that night as well, and my friends started talking to one student to ask her about the program. I didn't hear the entire conversation, but one of my cohorts told me the student had stated that ELEVEN people had failed out of NUR-181 alone during her course!

Now, there's always a chance there was some sort of misunderstanding or miscommunication, but does this sound right? For what it's worth, I would think the application process and competitiveness of getting in to the program would assure a strong student population, so it makes me nervous to hear these things. I already received some insight from someone privately, but I was wondering what the public population made of this info.

Thanks!

just got done with purchasing my uniform( I got a little holiday bonus.. :Dyay!!) guess I got lucky with the ready made small size fit. I purchased my shoes as well .. nurse mate brand feels very comfy

so I bought 1 uniform set plus jacket, shoes and a littman stethoscope ($60)

total was roughly $190.. not bad.. I out of there within 15 mins

As far as work.. I'm employed full-time 9am-5:30pm.. I know I may have to ask the boss for permission to leave earlier when clinicals start. which means I'll just to get to work earlier.. like you both said It has to be done:grn:

Good, I mean it sucks we must work but I can see weekend studying happening for a lot of us since we work... :)

if they give us the options to do clinicals on Saturdays I'm going to jump at it. I'd rather get it over with in one day as opposed to splitting it up.

True, but if u work 5 days a week, well then there goes your weekend. Tricky... MON and Tues are lectures... and im guessing exams aswell... weekends are goin to be essential for studying... i think... but idk... whatever works best for each of us... :)

M-F, 7:30-4 for me. I should have time to pick up the kids from school and still make it to class. If I start dozing off in class, just give me a kick. I too would rather have Sat or Sun clinicals. It's only for a few months anyway. I guess we will be meeting up on Sats or Suns in the library for group study? I told wifey that I probably, mostly likely, will be sacrificing weekends to study. Gotta be done.

do we need uniforms for lab? or just for clinicals

I opted for Saturday clinicals whenever it was offered. being in the evening program IMO you are exposed to less than our friends in the day program. You are on the floor the entire day for meds, AM care etc. Also, I was able to see PT, OT and RT in action as well...not to mention to see a few surgeries take place. Yes, you will have a front seat to the procedures.

Lecture is Mon and Tues...and you have the Wed - Fri off for studying and whatever else. This allowed me time to do the required assignments for clinicals: Nursing Care Plans, Process REcordings, Discharge Plans, Teaching Plans...etc

If my clinical Prof knew we had an exam on a Monday, we were able to get out a tad earlier so we had the rest of SAt and Sun to prepare.....not to mention the Wed-Fri prior.

In the beginning, I worked Mon - Fri 630 - 330, with clinicals on Weds and Thurs. So I would not get home until 930 - 10pm Mom - Thurs. I would often have to use work time to get my assignments done on time. I was to tired after a long day of work, then lectures to do any of my assignments before going to sleep...that's why I opted for the Saturday clinicals.

Sorry for the long rambling....just giving you my reasons for going with the sAturday clinicals when it was offered.

we are given a choice to do saturday clinicals instead of weds and thursday nights?

if we choose saturdays, what are the usual times?

also, if we choose weds and thurs night, arent the patients usually sleeping?

for clinicals, what would our exact day be like? do we get assigned a nurse to go ask what we need to do? do they tell us on the first day what we do and we keep doing that until the end of clinicals? so we take vitals, wash the patients, etc?

what time do you all get out of work? our classes/clinicals start at 5:30 right? so it means we need to leave work early so we wont hit traffic and be late.

I work in Manhattan, so i leave in time to catch the bus out of Port Authority (a 305pm or 325pm bus will usually get me back in time). but the thing is where you will have your clinicals.....Valley (Ridgewood), St Joe's (Wayne or Paterson), HUMC (Hackensack), Ramapo Ridge (Wyckoff), Bergen Regional (Paramus) . Obviously, the further out the clinical location, the more time you will need....and there were times during the winter months or even during a rainy day were you may need to allow a little more time to make it there on time. If you find getting there ontime a problem, make sure you explain this earlier to your Prof because lateness will be reflected in your clinical grade....and you can fail clinicals for missing to many classes, due to personal reasons or weather (2 wed/thurs classes and 1 full Saturday class is the max)...anything beyond this is not good.

I keep my uniform in the car and I will usually change at my Parents house or in one of the gas stations on Rt 4 if not at the clinical site....since I live all the way out Rt 208.

Please, please do not be late to clinicals. plan accordingly.

Saturday clinical hours: usually 7-5pm...some Profs will ask if you can start at 8am...which means ending at 6pm.

During the Weds and Thurs evening clinicals, you may have some patients that will go to sleep early...or that will experience sundown syndrome and you may have to double up or another patient with someone else. For the fellaz....in Level 3 (Maternity) you may have to sit and do very little since many men (dont want another man touching his wife) and women do not want to be cared for by a male.

before the start of clinicals, you will have a 1 day orientation basically outlining what the clinical prof expects, assignments you will have to complete, how you will be graded and letting you know what the plans are for the clinical day. yes, you will wash patients, give meds, bed pans, ambulate in hallway, massage, change dressing, give enemas.....heck...you will do everything with the exception of pushing IV meds, hanging potassium.

but it is usually based on the validations. you may not be asked to do that which you have not had validations for.

and oh....Level 3 psyche...uniforms are not necessary...you will go in business casual.

Hey All! Hope everyone had a good and rest full weekend.

Yessi---I also work full-time but my schedule varies daily. However, my boss is big on continuing education and supports me 100%. I start work at 7:30am everyday. My boss is allowing me to leave at 4pm Mon-Wed (I usually work til 6). Thurs and Friday I leave early anyway because I work overtime in the begining of the week. Like Daddy-O, I also work in Manhattan so I will have to plan accordingly. Traffic is so unpredictable.

Daddy-O I was SUPER excited to see that Bergen and Kean are teaming up and allowing us to complete our BSN! I see that Kean will accept 88 credits. I was at a 4 year college before Bergen and completed almost all of my pre-reqs for a B.A (minus the nursing) and I don't want to lose those credits. Where can I find out more information?? I was at Hunter College (68th & Lexington) It was a great college just really expensive and only offered nursing in the morning. They have an Accelerated program for Nurses with A.A.S that can get their BSN and Masters. Since my credits are from there, I was going to go there after Bergen. However, because my nursing courses are from a school other than CUNY I will have to pass numerous tests not to mention get my license to practice in NY. I really want to get my Masters-I'd like to be a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. I know you are taking some classes for UMDNJ. How is that going?? How many credits can you transfer over?

Enjoy your day everyone!! :)
