Being a school nurse?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

There is a job opening at the county school. The population at this school ranges from children with autism to severe physical problems. It would be more in depth nursing than a general elementary school, but way different than what I'm doing right now. Currently I'm an ER RN and have been since I graduated 6 months ago (although I worked there as a Tech for 3 years prior to getting my RN license). I love the skills that are required in my current job, but I'm a "flex" position which requires me to work all of the different shifts. That makes my current position challenging as my hubby also works night shift and we have 2 little girls at home and not much family that can help us. I'm considering applying for the school job as it would make our home life easier with the girls, but also think I could enjoy working with the kids there.

Is anyone a school nurse in a school like that? Could anyone give me some insight into what the job would be like?

I actually just turned DOWN a summer job like this. I do have school nurse experience, tons of nursey nurse experience, and experience with this population in adults. I turned it down for a few reasons, but mostly because I don't want to work with medically fragile peds. I am not experienced enough, and they deserve better than me. As much as I love to suction and cath, that is all adults.

I would post this in peds, school nurses, or if we have a DD thread.

The hours are great, of course.

I love my Special Ed guys in my school, but while there are seizures, they don't have serious physical illness.

Good luck!
