Beginning RN Salary in Louisiana

Hi everyone,

I am just starting clinicals this fall at LSUE, and I know I am kinda jumping the gun here , but I was just curious as to how much new RN's actually make just starting out around the Lafayette or Baton Rouge areas.

I know that you can look up salaries at www.salaries.com, but that would be averages for all RN's in the area. Not beginners like I hope to be some day.

I am thinking around $40,000/yr, or $18-$20/hr. If any of you new nurses can let me know, I would appreciate it!

On the Northshore, I have called a few hospitals... sounds about like $19.00

I've notice that some hospitals offer sign on bonuses up to $5000. What's the catch? Do you get the $ immediatley in your first paycheck or do you have to work there for two years? Also, how do the differentials work? If the base is 19/hr, but you work nights and evenings, plus some weekends...does that mean your hourly rate would be something like 25/hr?

Okay I am not a nurse yet, nor am I going for my RN yet, but I have checked around for salaries. The best deal that I have found is at the VA Medical Center, here in New Orleans. They have loan repayment programs, shift diffs, and starting pay for an RN with an ASN is 40,000, with a BSN it is a little less that $60,000. What a difference two years makes! For an RN with an ASN, that averages to about $20 and hour, and $3000 a month. For an RN with a BSN a little less than $31, an hour and $5000 amonth. Why the big difference I don't know, but that is what I was told by a woman in human resources.

I wonder why that is.... When I called the above mentioned two hospitals, they said that an "RN is and RN" and they dont give more for AD vs BSN unless you are in management. Hmmmmm

That's funny. Try calling on a Monday morning, if their ad was in the paper the day before (Sunday). That is when I called sometime in Nov. Then again maybe it just depends on who talk to. This is another lesson we all should learn, if someone is telling you something get their name, and get them to fax it over in writing if possible. But I'll try again when I see their ad in the paper.
