Becoming an LPN while nearing completion of RN program

Published

I am currently enrolled in an ASN program and with only 2 weeks left until I was supposed to graduate, I am devastated to find out that I ended up failing my Complex Med Surg class and there is no way for me to bring my grade up in time :crying2: I'm trying to remain positive but it is so hard when I was that close.

Does anyone know if it's possible for me to become an LPN now? I was only one course away from obtaining my Associate's and did not know if it was possible. I was planning on obtaining a Bachelor's, and I figure if I can become an LPN now, I'll do the LPN-BSN route.

If anyone could please give me any insight I would greatly appreciate it. I am located in Indiana.

Thank you.

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

Check with your Board of Nursing. I know in NY & NJ you cannot sit for the NCLEX-PN unless you complete a practical nursing program but that is not the same for all states (there are several states that require a practical nursing program as partial completion of the RN program is not equivalent (because not all areas are covered in the first year of an RN Program OR there are specific programs where the PN requirements are completed in the first year and the balance of the RN requirements are completed in the 2nd yr thus allowing the student to be eligible with school approval to sit for the NCLEX-PN)

So again, you need to check with your state board of nursing to determine if you are eligible to apply for LPN license.

First you need to find out if your state allows this. Contact your state Board or find the info on their website. Once you find out this information, go to your school and ask. Some schools will not sign off on a student's application paperwork. If your school does not cooperate, you are out of luck.

Same thing happened to me, try Arkansas they have an RN partial completion program that allows you to challenge the board for your PN, I am assuming that you have taken Pedi, Psych, Maternity, and Adult 1.
