The California Board of Nursing requires a United States Social Security Number to apply for a California nursing license...
From my research, I figure I must apply through a state that does not require a SSN to apply for a nursing license (for example, Minnesota) and then obtain licensure by endorsement to California (basically transfer my license from MN to CA).
Does anyone know if there is any way around that? Is it possible to get a US SSN without being American? I know previously, California used to accept applications without a SSN however, they no longer do. As far as I know, once my license has been transfered to California (or in the process of) and I get a job, I can apply for a SSN once I have a letter of employment?
Has anyone had experience with this?!
Any additional information would be greatly appreciated!!

My first travel company helped me but what we did was, had all my CGFNS stuff all done, most paperwork done ect. I had obvious already taken my NCLEX, got my license through Minnesota. Had my Job offer about a month ahead of time (travel assignment). My company flew me to Seattle, I went to a SS office(taking the stupid bus....rent a car its easier), applied, flew home (Edmonton) the same day. It was a bit of a pain because it took about a month and I was due to start work. My company travel specialist actually wrote a letter to the senator of washington to get the process sped up so I could start work on time. Once I had that, I was able to endorse I believe. I hear these days California is slower with endorsement due to their many government issues. And when I left Canada to work in California I got my TN Visa at the border on the way. My social security card came about 3 weeks later. Anticipate it taking up to a month. Hope this makes some sense. Its been a while so I don't remember the process too clearly because I don't need to lol

Until in the US with a valid work/immigrant visa you can not apply for a SSN. Endorsing isn't always easy as you may be still required to meet requirements so I would suggest checking with CA BRN what requirements are if endorsing and International trained
thank you so much for your replys!

Same here from Toronto. I just passed my NCLEX in Minnesota State. I also want to endorse my license to California. I'm also waiting for my Visa Screen Certificate. Does anyone know if it is okay to send all my requirements in advance for endorsement to California BON pending SSN. I know I would need an offer of employment before I can get my SSN.
As mentioned in a previous thread, CA will not accept application without a SSN

I am hoping to work in California as well someday as I have family there. I am currently licensed and working in Ontario. I applied to Michigan first and I am waiting to write the NCLEX. Once I become licensed in MI I will work there for a bit in order to get a SSN, then I will apply to California by endorsement. I don't believe you can apply to California by endorsement without a SSN because the requirements of applicants are still the same.
