 Has anyone ever heard piggybacking a pca pump programmed to infuse med at 12mg/hr(1.2cc) to a line of D5NS running in via Baxter pump which is programmed to infuse at 45cc/hr. I have difficulty understanding how the dose of med would be accurate if one pump is prog. for 45cc an hour and the other 1.2cc/hr. Can anyone explain.

We always piggy back using a oneway valve . NS at kvo helps to the small amount of pain med pushing into the vein. The key is to make sure you have the valve.

You have to at least have a med running @ 2cc/hr to keep the line open, so if we have anything running @ less than 2 cc, you need something to "push it in". We have piggybacked the PCA to maintenance IVF on the Baxter pump, but like the poster before me, you have to make sure you ALWAYS have a one way valve on the PCA line.

You might also check your tubing....A lot of IV tubing now days has backflow protection built in...........
