Okay, current and/or former students and rejectees:

Has anyone been rejected due to their gpa? Was the gpa less than 3.2. I'm afraid that with their competivness, I won't get accepted.

Hello,

I was just wondering what UMSL's program is like--just to compare! How many classes do you take at a time? How many students are in a typical class? How many semesters is the entire program? For an average week, how many hours do you attend class? Are you happy with what you've experienced so far?

I guess everybody has a different idea of what they want and what they can work with, and for everybody you find who really likes a program you're going to find someone who doesn't. I'm just wondering what your thoughts are.

Thanks.

Hello! I'll try to keep it short on here, so if I don't answer all your questions you are more than welcome to PM me!!

-We take 4 classes each semester, with the exception being our last semester we just take 3 classes (12 credits).

-Our accelerated group that just started this past May has 29 students in it...so our class size is never larger than that. During the summer, our Fundamentals lab was split up into two groups...so my class only had about 13 people in it. You really get to know everyone in the program rather quickly because it is so small..but it's fun!

-We have 4 semesters just like the "traditional" BSN program. The difference is that we go during the summer instead of having them off. So, we started this past May, and went 'til the 1st of August. That was our first semester (we took Fundamentals of Nursing, Health Assessment, Nursing Informatics, and Pathophysiology). Our Fall and Spring semesters are the same in length as the "traditional" program...so we really are not going any faster than the regular program until the end of May comes around again. We have our last semester starting May of 2009, and we graduate at the beginning of August of 2009...which makes the program a total of 15 months.

-My class schedule now is as such (to give you an idea how often I attend class/lab): Mondays: off, Tuesdays: Adult Health 1 (Med/Surg)-9-11:50 & Psych/Mental Health Nursing-1-3:20, Wednesdays: Pharmacology-9-11:50, Thursdays: Adult Health Lab/Clinical: 8-2, Friday: Mental Health Clinical-8-2...the clinical days vary in hours depending on where/what we are doing. During lab we aren't there as long. We also have an online course of Nursing Research...but that doesn't require any "class" time.

-So far, I'm very pleased with the program. I was nervous it would be too crazy. I was wary at first to go into an accelerated program..but now I am so glad I did this route. I think 12 months would be too fast for me personally, but I know people at the Barnes Accelerated BSN program right now and they like it (they admit it's tough, but nursing school is tough no matter what!!). It's just a bonus getting done a year earlier than normal no matter which accelerated program you choose!! :) I think Barnes sounds pretty good from what I have heard, just much more time consuming than UMSL's..I guess since theirs is 12 months instead of 15! Good luck whichever route you choose!!:nurse:

Hey there, FriendlyGhost. MANY big thanks for the info on UMSL's program. It's really great information to have, and it's wonderful to know you like the program. For me, what really jumped out was the class size/s. That's very compelling for me. Having been through tough classes with 80 students and tough ones with 25-30, I'll absolutely take the latter.

I am also really glad to hear that you know people at Barnes who like the accelerated program there. That's actually a relief to know. (It's also the first time I've heard something positive about the school...and I'm really glad to get that kind of feedback.)

Sounds like you're doing really well at UMSL. It sounds like a good size, pace and overall program. Keep us posted as to how you're doing and how the program's going.

Cheers....Donn

Oh, Nik Nik....don't give up on the community colleges either...sometimes there's a reason why we have to wait....have you retaken the dosage test yet?!?!?[/quo

Update....I passed the dosage test. Now, lets see how long this wait list is.....

Hi, I have been accepted to BJC and will start in May '09 for the accelerated program. I've been reading some things on here that kind of scare me... anyway does anyone know what their NCLEX pass rate is coming out of this program? I can't seem to find the info on their site (also scares me...) I can still turn in my application to SLU, but I know it's way more expensive and I didn't want to further my student loan debt any more than necessary. I just moved to this area and had no one to ask about the program until now, and I still cannot find anyone who is currently in the program, just people who are starting soon like me. Any feedback from someone who has completed the accelerated program would be great.

Thanks!

Hey baily I cant figure out how to email you back, but my step mom didnt like bjc because they were really unhelpfull and they have a low pass rate on the nclex. But ive also met students at my clinicals that like it there, so hope that helps!

I am a 3rd (final) semester student at Barnes in the Accelerated program. Currently, the Accelerated NCLEX pass rate is at 100%. Please feel free to ask any other questions and I'll answer the best I can! :typing

Hi lovescoffee- sounds like you don't hate the program, which is encouraging to me! I am still feeling very nervous about starting in May, but hope this fear subsides soon after getting my feet wet!

Anyway just wondering if you have any advice for things I can do to prepare for the program right now. Currently I do not have any classes since I finished my pre-reqs already, so I have time to maybe start getting familiar with pharmacology or something else. Any suggestions about this?

Also anything else encouraging about the program would be awesome, so please feel free to lay it on me!

Thanks for your help!

Hi lovescoffee. I'm currently a p/t PCT and hope/expect to start the 1yr accelerated BSN program in Jan '10. I would love to maintain my p/t PCT employee status but that requires a min. 16hours/week. Is this stupid to even consider? I'm sure time is precious when you're in the accelerated program. Do you know anyone who's pulled this off?

A warning about barnes. I am a grad from barnes..they are very disorganized and if you fail a med test you have two other tryies. The med test is done at the start of every class. Every class has its med tet. The clinical instructors are a joke. I have several whom wouldn't even let the students touch patients or pass out meds. I really wish I would have went to forest park.

I'm finishing up the accelerated program at Barnes right now---graduation May 2, 2009!!! It's been very stressful to say the least, but nursing school is stressful in general. I'm not sure if I would do it this way again due to the stress, but it is definitely "doable", and it's good to be almost done compared to the other route which I would only be halfway done! If you're going the accelerated route, just try to get yourself prepared mentally for high stress, anxiety and never ending work/studying and enjoy the ride as much as possible! Good luck...if I can do it, anyone can!
