Balancing a semester: Micro with Anatomy or Physiology?

Published

My background in the sciences is very limited, so I know that I will need to extensively study for these classes.

I would like to take them during different semesters, but I'm kind of on a time crunch. I only have two semesters left.

Should I take micro with anatomy, micro with physiology, or anatomy with physiology during the same semester?

How difficult are these classes for someone who has a limited background in the sciences? What's the average studying time needed for each of these classes?

Thank you!

I already took anatomy and I'm taking micro with physiology this coming semester. I'm taking the same professor I took for anatomy for physiology so I already know what to expect and am confident I will do well and enjoy it. All the classes are challenging so it's really up to you.

Anatomy is a prerequisite for physiology in my CC. I wouldn't take either at the same time. If you have no choice though take anatomy and micro together instead of micro and physio. I had a classmate in anatomy that was taking it with micro and boy was he getting his ass kicked. He barely passed. I had another classmate who did the same and she ended up with an A in anatomy and a B in micro.

I also had a classmate in physio who was taking it with micro and she struggled but she managed to pass with B's in both classes.

It all depends on your study habits and on how dedicated you are. Be prepared to study your butt off and good luck! :)

fyi guys in most places anatomy is combined with physio into one two semester course...i honestly cant see how either could be fully understood if learned separately..thats odd. i would take anat with physio or micro with physio because it makes more sense that way.

btw i took ap2 with micro and i got an A in AP2 and a B+( im talking like an 89.4%) in micro(i wish i hadnt been sick during the fourth exam).

I dunno that's how they do it in my CC. I think most CC's in LA have it that way (GCC, PCC, LACC). Anatomy with lab was 5 units, physio with lab 4 units, and micro with lab 5 units. I liked with because we got to focus on anatomy only and physiology only. Considering that they are different branches of science, I think you can study anatomical structures and the systems of the body more extensively that way, but that is just my opinion.

ive talked to many AP professors and students who've had it both ways and the consensus is that learning form and function at the same time helps tremendously. imagine having to learn cell biology without the function of everything to help associate each organelle to the next...that would be weird to learn golgi apparatus, nucleolus, etc and THEN golgi apparatus packages blah blah. imo it just doesnt make sense to learn form and then function.

Well the way they taught it at my CC was they would teach us the structure and some of the functions in anatomy (e.g. the pathways of the flow of blood from one organ to another), but physio really goes into it with a lot more details. Chem and anatomy were prerequisites to physio and chem was also a prerequisite to micro. I liked learning it that way because we really went through every single detail, but to each their own ;) that is also how they teach them at most universities here in my area.

I'm going to be taking Anatomy and Micro starting in less than 2 weeks. I just finished my physiology class and it was a 6 week summer course...very intense, but I pulled off a B!

I wouldn't want to take physiology and micro together....just my 2 cents. I've heard that Micro is the hardest of all 3, but I would imagine physiology is a close second!

Hello all,

I am from NY and here we have AP1 and AP2 I don't think I would have the patience to learn anat then physi for two whole terms:cool:. I've previously taken these two classes at another school but they were not transferable. I have a general knowledge of them, however, I;ve never taken Chemistry. So, I am wondering how hard is Chem. I want to take AP1 with Chem but I am a little nervous because I heard that Chem is really hard. I don't have any close friends that have taken it to be able to really judge how hard it really is. Is chem really that hard?

My classes were combined A&P classes so I am basing my suggestion on assumptions not experience FWIW. I suggest taking micro with anatomy. Anatomy is a lot of rote memorization. Physiology and micro both require a lot of (for lack of a better word) understanding. I wouldn't take two "heavy" classes together. I guess it also depends on how easily you can remember things. I can cram with the best of them and that made the anatomy portion easier for me. G/L

Hi Alliedhealth, I took chem with anatomy before and it was not hard. Just understand the concepts and memorize how to solve problems. I got an A in both classes. I have yet to take biochem and I heard it's hard but like all hard classes, we go into them and give our best! Good luck!

Wow... Best Of Luck. I was gonna try and take Micro, O-Chem and Nutrition. An advisor quickly halted it. I recommend you splitting it up if you can, but if you can handle it, GO FOR IT!
