bad nursing care

Published

Ok,

So I am home from another great weekend at my LTC facility.

I had one little lady break my heart and one cranky old guy fry me up.

Ladies first. My little lady who is a R hip replacement ttwb wants to go to her room .

I don't want her to cause when she is in rm where I can't see her she gets up and limps around.

I am pretty sure at that point she is bearing all her wt.

So I am trying to keep her up in day rm where I can see her, after quite some time of redirecting she finally wears me down and I take her to her rm where she starts crying.

"I am used to being the voluenteer not the pt and I just don't understand why people won't help me." :crying2:

Clincher....Some people should just not be nurses.

Ouch!:crying2::crying2::crying2:

Cranky old guy; he gets about 70% of my time and after calling me to rm to repeat (unnecessarily ) dressing changes, I am pretty warn down.

He is angry cause he had to wait 30 minutes for me to get his dressing done , cause I was sending another pt to hospital for possible GI bleed.

He tells me he is not satisfied with the nursing care he received today.

Wow , Really?

What can you say to that besides I 'm sorry you are unhappy with the care you received.:banghead:

Is there anything I can do for you right now ?

How bout some high speed lead therapy?

Seriously , I was in this guys room at least 20 times today not one time did he raise an issue I didn't deal with.

Can not figure out how to do any more with 24 patients.

I'm sorry to hear about your terrible weekend! I don't know how you are able to manage 24 patients safely. I don't blame you for feeling fried.

I hope it gets better for you!

I think we can understand you clearly. Your care for 24 patients is not right. We are struggling with ours because of the type of care we have to provide. I know when I play "tech" days, I don't know how you guys do it.

It is not right for any of us.

I can tell you this. When I have time, you would NOT be alone. I would be helping you. It is hard on all of us in this field. I think the workload on the aides/techs is just as bad as the nurses. Hopefully we will see a change soon. If I had my way, you would NOT be going through this.

Please DO protect your back.

Exactly what kind of responsibilities do you have for these 24 patients? I can not fathom it being at all possible to provide care for that number. Just giving meds would take all day. Sometimes we staff an extra nurse if census is high to do med pass, and when I have done that it has taken from 0700 when I get there to around 1300.

I have only had a couple of patients complain to me about the care I was providing, and both were notorious for being difficult to please. I directed them right to my supervisor, after I explained my POV. I haven't even tried to defend myself to the patient, because to me "defending" myself would be a waste of time. They have their mind made up.

You do sound like a caring, and great nurse that is working in conditions that are unreasonable. Think about it this way, if you have a 12 hour shift with 24 patients, then you are only alotted 30 minutes per patient.
