First off. I would like to state I was CNA before becoming an LPN. I currently work 3-11 during day shift there there is a nurse 4 CNAs, one med tech, and a restorative aide. During my shift there are 2 CNAs and me. I'm experiencing tons of complainants from first shift on not changing residents I offered to start running this shift. How do you keep unruly CNAs in line?

It depends. If administration doesn't back their nurses, it will be an uphill battle.

I used to check every resident at various times during the shift to keep my CNAs on their toes. I would write them up if residents were found wet, without side rails, etc. Sometimes they will just see how far they can push you.

You're 3-11 shift. Is the problem the 7-3 CNAs or those on your 3-11?

Do you have overlapping shifts so that your aides can make rounds with the 7-3 shift?

Is there a supervisor on your shift? You need to alert her so she can bring this up with 7-3. Otherwise you need to go up the chain of command. Handling the problem across 2 shifts is difficult. You need to go back to 7-3 so they get first chance to straighten out their problem CNAs.

Having your charge nurse or DON back you up is a great help. If they choose to overlook the situation, it's very hard to get the situation under control.
