Hello everyone. My first posting so hang in there...

I have a BA and an MPA and would like to know how a person might go about becoming an RN or BSN without having to retake general ed courses I have already taken??

Can anyone direct me to getting info?

Contact some universities you are interested in, depending on how long ago your obtained your BA, most gen-ed classes will transfer over and you will only be left with perhaps the gen-ed classes needed for a BS (sometimes they are different).

Most second-degree accelerated BSN or direct-entry MSN programs require about 20-30 credits of prerequisites related to nursing. You probably have some of the social science classes, but you might have to take/repeat the science courses such as chemistry and A&P. I suggest using http://www.allnursingshools.com as a jumping off point.

Usually only the science courses have a time limit on them for transfer. Some schools you have to had the sciences within 5 years, other schools it is 10. Each school is different, but all will require microbiology and A&P, and with an MA it's not likely you've taken those.

I was in a similar situation and considered doing the accelerated route (which would have meant moving to another state and $$$$$$). However, I applied and went through a local ADN-diploma program. This was the right decision for me--although I certainly had my doubts in the beginning.

As I move forward, I'm hopeful the hospital I work for will pay/contribute towards my BSN education, which, given the previous degrees, should only be a few courses. I plan on looking into University of Phoenix online for my BSN.

The ADN program accepted all of my old general ed classes. I just had to take the sciences.

Your general education courses almost always transfer where ever you go. I've been in 5 different colleges since taking my basic ed classes in 1969 and they always are taken in transfer at whatever school I've gone to. The only problem I ever ran across was my BSN school requiring that my anatomy and physiology and microbiology be taken within the last 10 years. Of course, it had been 11 years since I had taken A&P so I had to take it over. My BSN school also had some fine arts and math requirements that I just didn't have enough transfer credits to fullfill, plus one quirky requirement that was unique to their school that everyone had to do. You won't know until you actually apply to a college exactly what classes they will take in transfer. But, basic courses like English Comp, Am. History, College Biology, College Algebra, stuff like that is usually taken in transfer. Also, the college's catalog will tell you how many credit hours must be taken at their school in order to get a degree from them.
