BA in Social Work to nursing?

Published

Hello everyone, I am graduating this May with my BA in Social Work in PA with advanced standing. I have a few years of Physical Aid experience under my belt plus am certified as a phlebotomist and MA. I am looking at future options besides an MSW and am thinking about nursing to combine with my BSW

What would my schooling path look like to become a nurse with a BA in Social Work? I am a single parent and need to work at least part time.

Thank you!

It can really vary. You'd most likely need to take some biology, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, classes prior to applying to a nursing program..

I'd go to the nearest community and 4 year college and talk to an advisor from the nursing program.

Don't go to a private, expensive, for profit school no matter how quickly they say you can get your degree from them.

I worked as a social worker (BSW) for 7 years while taking classes/deciding what I ultimately wanted to do. I was fortunate to keep my job part time as I worked through school. I went back for an ADN and will be pursuing my BSN online soon.

It will be pretty much the same as most other nursing students with better writing skills perhaps. Most are able to work a part-time job unless you enroll in an accelerated program where work at all may be difficult (nothing is impossible). It's usually a matter of how much time is required at school (one program kept them in class 8hr/day for 3 days/week plus clinical. Mine followed the college credits and had two 3-4 hour classes/week plus clinical), how much time YOU personally need to study, and what you are willing to sacrifice to get those work hours in.

You'll need to successfully complete the prereqs for nursing school, then apply. You won't get any advanced standing for your degree except being eligible for accelerated programs.
