Average Hospice NP pay per visit

Published

Hi,

I was just offered a Hospice NP position in LA area at $75/visit + mileage. Does this pay seem fair? The position is to re-certify the patients and make sure they are still eligible for hospice care. I have been working in ICU as bedside RN for a little over 4 years and I just recently graduated from NP school 1 year ago. Should I ask for more considering how much gas prices has gone up? I'd really appreciate your advice since I am not really familiar with the nurses' pay in hospice care. Thank you :)

How much will you be driving? How many patients will you see per day?

My question is if this takes 2 hours in paperwork (I have no idea) then you are making 36/hour plus using your own gas. Ok, how many gallons at 4+ per gallon. I would really need to have all the info before I said yes.

Thank you so much for replying. I will probably drive about 20-25 miles away from home at the most. When I asked them how many pt I'm going to see per day, they told me it all depends on how far apart the patients are located. I will also be getting mileage at 51cent per mile. They told me I only have to assess the patients (so each visit probably takes 15-20min at the most) and very minimal paperwork (dictate 4-5 sentences only).

So it sounds like you would see 5 patients per day I thinking. Makes more sense. Just watch the wear and tear on your car. My husband drives for work and has to spend 2600 to get his car fixed. Yikes!

You're right...kind of worried about the wear and tear on my car. That's why I was thinking of asking for a higher pay (esp considering the gas prices and higher cost on fixing cars) but it's hard because I am not familiar with how much hospice NPs are getting paid. Thanks again for your input.

Sounds like a great job to me! 51 cents per mile is the IRS allowable rate for TAX FREE reimbursement. If you saw 1 pt per hour = 8 pts per day, 5 days per week, that's $3000 per week or approx $144k per year with a month off...

I am a community palliative NP, and I find that a thorough assessment takes way more than 15 minutes (usually 1-2 hours for an initial assessment visit in the home, not including drive time), to get a thorough history and physical. But, maybe as a "reaassessment", you can shave this down. Is it possible to trial the job, or shadow someone first? My behind the scenes work is extensive, but could be apples and oranges. I am paid an hourly rate and gas mileage, but the hourly is for 4 ten hours days a week, regardless of whether I am in the office or seeing clients. I'm sure there are regional differences as well. Best of luck!

I do not think it would be possible to see 8 patients per day. Also count drive time and traffic issues. What if a patient is chatty. You can't just run in and run out. Would you not have to ask them some questions. I know on our admissions I have to keep the ball rolling. Some of these folks are just so lonely. They do not understand you have to keep moving to make any money.

Thank you for all your replies. I really appreciate it. I decided to give it a try. The pay doesn't seem to be too bad...I only hope that they have enough case load to keep me busy. Thanks again. :)

Good luck - and keep us posted! I'm interested in this model....

As you said, its a function of caseload....

I am in the same boat I got offered $85 per visit in Riverside area. But this is for intial assessments, anyone know how much companies can bill for this and if I should ask for more since it is an initial assessment for home health?
