nurses top honesty poll for tenth year

the australian nursing federation is very proud of the nurses of australia after they topped the roy morgan poll for the country's most honest and ethical professional for the tenth year in a row.

nurses have been ranked the highest since they were included in the poll in 1994. the increase from 86% in 1994 to 94% in 2003 shows that public support for nurses is now even greater.

'this result shows that the people of australia are very satisfied with the care they receive from nurses,' anf acting federal secretary ged cowin said.

'nurses are part of people's lives when they are most vulnerable and they take their duty of care very seriously. they are strong advocates on all issues that affect their patients.

'nurses are highly skilled communicators. they work in many different settings, such as hospitals, aged care facilities, factories, schools, prisons, the defence forces and the community, in a variety of roles. nurses promote health and wellness and support people when they are in crisis or when they are ill or dying.

'as the most trusted professionals, nurses also have a unique opportunity to speak out on broader public and social issues.

'these poll results show there is great value in governments investing in nursing education and the nursing workforce.

the australia-wide survey of professional ethics and honesty was conducted by roy morgan on november 28-29 2003 for which 626 people aged 14 and over were interviewed by telephone. view website

okay - that is us, so how do you think you would fare in your corner of the world if the survey was carried out there???:)

America probably would not fair so well in the polls if that same survey were taken here due to our country being lawsuit happy, having gotten use to an "I want what I want YESTERDAY" service, and the lack of respect given nurses from what I've witnessed in today's nursing world among admin, staff, and patient family members (more so than the patients themselves at times).
