Attributes of a good psych nurse

Published

I'm wondering what you think good attributes of a psych nurse would be? On the other hand, how about bad attributes? I'm just trying to get a feel of the different areas I am interested in. For some reason, dh thinks that psych would be the best fit for me and I would like to see what you guys think are good qualifications.

Being able to listen. Being able to stay calm and in control as kaos occurs around you. Not being scared when someone threatens you. Caring about people. Good luck.

Thanks anyone else?

I think it would be important not to have preconceptions about people with mental illness and to view those who are afflicted as no less human than anyone else.

that's easy enough for me since I suffer from PTSD.

Being firm but kind. Being able to set boundaries and stick to 'em. Being able to accept your patient as s/he is without making judgements. Being able to listen without laughing when someone tells you the most incredibly bizarre hallucinations.

Ya know...a few years ago, I never would have been able to do some of these things yoiu list, such as being firm but kind and setting boundaries. I can see how much I have changed now.

Being objective, and NON-JUDGEMENTAL!!
