Attention Memphians!

Hello fellow Memphians! I have a question for you. I am really interested in going to Nursing school in Memphis but there seem to be alot of choices. IE: SW TN Comm College, University of Memphis, Methodist, and Baptist. I have looked at information on each of these schools but I haven't really talked to anyone that has any first-hand experience. I eventually want to get a BSN, maybe even an MSN but I think I would like to get my education in chunks. Maybe start out with a diploma or ADN. My husband and I would like to try for another child in the midst of my education so I would definitely need a good stopping point to take off for a semester or so. I was just wondering if any of you had any experience with these schools that you would care to share, like do you like it, are the instructors helpful, or anything you can think of. I think I will start out at SW TN Comm College this fall to take care of prereqs since I have probably already missed the deadline for Nursing school applications for fall.

Hi. I'm just now starting my nursing courses at University of Memphis. I decided to go for my BSN so I wouldn't have to go back to school twice to get my MSN...and I already had a year of general education classes done before I decided to go to nursing school.

As far as having a child...I have a 2 year old son. I had him while I was still completing my pre-reqs. I didn't have to take any time off because I had him during the summer, but it was tough. I do have a few friends who took a semester off during their gen ed classes because they were pregnant and delivered during a semester.

Anyway, I don't know if you have completed any general education classes or not, but I think that's the best time to plan a child if you're going to. I only say this because the load tends to be a lot lighter during these classes.

At Memphis, the suggested time for your general ed classes is 2 years (I think). Then 2.5 years for the core nursing courses. I know this takes a lot longer than an ADN, but for me it's worth it. (I know everyone is diferent, so please don't think I'm judging anyone going for ADN. Two of my good friends are at Baptist and Methodist...they love it.)

I just think that you have to look into all of your options before deciding. You could even talk to some people at the schools that you're looking at...that always helps. And check out the web pages for the schools, too. http://www.nursing.memphis.edu
