At what age to not report drug use to parents?

Hey guys,

Quick question- if a 17 year old comes into the ER and is on drugs and begs you not to tell her dad- at what age do you keep this the patient's private personal info? or do you have to tell the parents?

I know here in CA for pregnancy its 12. After that if they dont want you to tell you cant tell. but not sure about drugs. anyone know? for sure?? would appreciate solid references to confirm if you know.

from a quick glimps at the drug and alcohol related section, it looks like minor consent is needed in order to disclose the information unless you feel that they are going to end up harming themselves.

I was going to say, check with your state laws,

Usually I believe it is 15 where the patient can say who has access to their medical record

Also you want that patient to trust you, for instance where they also sexually active and at risk for STI

They most likely won't disclose and will feel distrust with medical staff, if you tell the parents without their permission.

Also other things to think about, that teens home life, are the parents going to kick them out, or abuse them if they find out that the kid is using drugs or sexually active?
