At my age it is too hard to work in SNF

I have been an LPN for 34 years and currently not working. I have been trying to find a work at home job or something easier then I have done. I used to work at SNF but with my age it is getting harder. All the other places I apply for say not enough experience. How can I get experience if no one will hire me? So aggravated.

I understand how frustrating that must be, especially with your extensive experience. Here are a few strategies that might help:

  • Focus on transferable skills. Highlight the skills you've developed over 34 years as an LPN, such as patient care, communication, and medication management. These can be valuable in telehealth, case management, or utilization review.
  • Online courses/certifications. Consider taking short online courses or certifications to refresh your skills in telehealth, medical coding, or utilization review. This can make your resume stand out and show potential employers you're committed to adapting to new roles.
  • Networking. Reach out to former colleagues, join LPN/LVN forums, and connect with people on LinkedIn who are working in the fields you're interested in. Sometimes, getting a referral from someone can make a huge difference.

If you can, consider volunteering in a healthcare-related role. This can help you gain experience in a new field while showing potential employers that you're actively engaged in the industry.

Temp or contract work: Look for temporary or contract positions that might require less experience. These can be easier to land and provide the expertise you need to transition into a new role.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth

Not sure what your age it but it sounds like your lack of experience is what's holding you back. Consider assisted living facilties, home health or hospices. Often times, especially home health agencies, are open to hiring LPN's with little to no experience - at least in the area I live.
