ASU Post-Baccalaureate BSN 2017 - Welcome

U.S.A. Arizona

Hey everyone,

I am a current post-bacc student at ASU. I wanted to start a thread for all of you who are applying for the 2017 class. Last year we had amazing support from the 2015 class, so we wanted to carry on that tradition and provide you all with the same support system. Feel free to use this thread to ask questions and seek advice. Many of my classmates will be on here answering your questions as well!

Good luck to you all!

So we won't wear maroon or the ASU colors? Cool that it's black scrub bottoms. I have that color for work (ER at Gateway).

You wear a maroon scrub top, polo, and/or jacket if you choose to buy one (they are embroidered with "Arizona State College of Nursing and Health innovation") with any black scrub bottoms you want! That is awesome that you work at Gateway! That experience will come in handy in this program.

I'll opt for scrub top simply for the pockets! I've worn polo shirts and they're not that comfortable or convenient. However, maroon scrubs at Banner mean "psych patient." Ha!

I do like working at Gateway. I'm a scribe and follow the docs around, do all the charting, write scripts, and print discharge paperwork. I feel I see more than volunteers or techs, but I envy the techs skills. However, you probably know that a good portion of what a nurse does is CHARTING! It's horrible but true. I've got some mad charting skills. :)

Has anyone else re-emailed their adviser about the 40 or 48 spots? Its weird that last year they found out early sept and this year its so much later? I would think they would/could get through the application process much quicker this year since so few applicants?

Jlg830 and celester321

Have you two heard anything from your advisors regarding available spots?

@Horsegirl7575

I was hoping that having fewer applicants would speed up the process too but when my advisor said they're anticipating 48 spots, I was also told that notices would go out in November still.

How specific are they on shoes during clinicals? I know they need to be white or black but some brands have logos such as puma or nike that are on the side and are other colors like silver. Would those be okay?

The shoes need to be black. A logo in a different color on the side is fine. It's funny, I had the same concern before I started this program a year ago. I actually used a black sharpie to color in the side of my shoes and then found out that I didn't need to do that!

Now that fall semester has started can you guys tell me what the day to day is like? What are your hours that you are in class, lab or clinic? Do you have much down time to study during the day? Are all the classes online?

Fall has been the hardest for me during this program. We currently have two classes with clinicals (critical care and community health). We only have critical care for the first 8 weeks, so hopefully this schedule will die down soon. We also have a few online courses that are kind of homework heavy. With that being said, we have community clinicals on Monday, critical care clinicals and lab on tuesday and Wednesday, and then Critical care and community lectures on Thursday and Friday. There are a few days off during the middle of the week depending on your clinical group. It isn't as fast paced as the summer, but we have A LOT more going on in terms of assignments and things we need to do. After critical care ends, we will start our immersions (Oct. 12th). We just received our immersion placements, and I think most of use are pretty excited about that! So the last half of the semester we will just have immersion clinicals, Community health, and our online courses.

After you receive your acceptance letter, what happens after that prior to the first day of class? About when was orientation and what did it consist of?

So after the acceptances, things went really really fast. We had to do a drug test, pay for a background check, get signed off by a physician (Health clearance form), sign/fill out required forms (like millions of these), ASU registration, JR 1 welcome meeting, and lighting of the lamp ceremony. On top of that, you needed to buy uniforms, some equipment (stethoscope, shoes, badge holder, etc.), and lastly all the books and online learning type things you need to purchase.

Roughly 1 month till we all find out!
