I would be careful with Apsen University.  My director told me to stay away from them.  They are nationally accredited but not regionally accredited.  Even though being nationally accredited sounds like it is the more important accreditation, it is really the regional accreditation that matters.  Non-regionally accredited schools are usually cheaper in price.  Your degree will only be valid in some parts of the country and some employers won't except a degree from a school the is not regionally accredited.  Also, transferring credits from a non-regionally accredited school to another school is almost impossible if you are thinking about furthering your education.

I guess it depends...Aspen is accredited by CCNE which is nationally accredited. They are not regionally accredited but neither is USC or Duke. That doesn’t take away from the education received. As far as transferring, I was able to apply and get my credit transferred to Duke, USC, Georgetown, Vanderbilt, Bradley, and UCSF—all which are highly rated schools for NP or DNP with only national accreditation. My suggestion is that instead for listening to others, do your own research as it pertains to what your ultimate nursing educational goals in relation to where you’d practice... So, discrediting program a nationally accredited program if based on hearsay. I work for the #4 or #6 hospital (depending on the year, 2019 vs 2020 according to US News)  in the USA, and so far, I’ve not had an issue about my degree. If anything, I’ve learned so much that is applicable to the patient population that we treat. PS: USC is CCNE accredited and is definitely NOT cheaper in price, neither is Duke or Vanderbilt. If you plan to stay in California, New York, or Illinois — then CCNE is recognized.

Thank you for your post kmRN33. I think some people get hung up on nationally accredited programs and regionally accredited program. I researched before I start my program at Aspen .....who would not research first  !?! I am finishing my public health program in a few classes but I am not doing the program to move on to an NP Program but I want to be a corporate level nurse in the company I work for so I figured having a MSN would help my chances but I am also going to finish the MSN in teaching at Aspen so I can make some extra money on side doing some teaching in a LPN or ADN programs.

So to anyone that is thinking about Aspen or any school research the school & pick the school that works for U!

Good for you! I don’t understand why people would post things based on “hearsay”. Like you said, I am investing time and money into a MSN program, then I know that I am researching accreditation and everything else from their price point, online platform used etc. it’s disheartening for someone to decide to further their education just to have someone discredit or “warn” you about accreditation. At the end of the day, it really depends on the ultimate goal...   and it seems that being in a corporate setting, they’ll prefer a”national accreditation” vs regional...

Funny thing, you work in corrections? So does my mom in a city jail..and she went to a CCNE school. She loves it! For me, I am not as tough as my mom...LOL.

Good luck. And DM me for any help with your last subjects, I just went through it so, it’s still fresh! Btw, if you change your mind, you can get a post MSN certificate family/acute care/psychiatric/ gerontology NP for 12-18 months from any of the schools mentioned above, except for USC, their program incorporates social services, so you’d have to get their Masters in order to do their NP Program. I felt like 1 MSN is enough!

Take care and you got this!

Anyone done their MSN here from Canada? I see a lot of discussion regarding its accreditation and how it affects them in the USA, I was just wondering if it had any affect on people in Canada?
