deciding on online DNP
I finished the MSN program last year and decided not to do my DNP, instead I transferred to NP school,I think they are extremely affordable. I received support and help when in needed it (especially with transitions from apa 6 to 7!). Other thoughts to consider is if your state recognizes national or regional accreditation. Aspen has national accreditation (CCNE) like USC, Georgetown, and Duke...

Good for you! I don’t understand why people would post things based on “hearsay”. Like you said, I am investing time and money into a MSN program, then I know that I am researching accreditation and everything else from their price point, online platform used etc. it’s disheartening for someone to decide to further their education just to have someone discredit or “warn” you about accreditation. At the end of the day, it really depends on the ultimate goal... and it seems that being in a corporate setting, they’ll prefer a”national accreditation” vs regional... Funny thing, you work in corrections? So does my mom in a city jail..and she went to a CCNE school. She loves it! For me, I am not as tough as my mom...LOL. Good luck. And DM me for any help with your last subjects, I just went through it so, it’s still fresh! Btw, if you change your mind, you can get a post MSN certificate family/acute care/psychiatric/ gerontology NP for 12-18 months from any of the schools mentioned above, except for USC, their program incorporates social services, so you’d have to get their Masters in order to do their NP Program. I felt like 1 MSN is enough! Take care and you got this!

I guess it depends...Aspen is accredited by CCNE which is nationally accredited. They are not regionally accredited but neither is USC or Duke. That doesn’t take away from the education received. As far as transferring, I was able to apply and get my credit transferred to Duke, USC, Georgetown, Vanderbilt, Bradley, and UCSF—all which are highly rated schools for NP or DNP with only national accreditation. My suggestion is that instead for listening to others, do your own research as it pertains to what your ultimate nursing educational goals in relation to where you’d practice... So, discrediting program a nationally accredited program if based on hearsay. I work for the #4 or #6 hospital (depending on the year, 2019 vs 2020 according to US News) in the USA, and so far, I’ve not had an issue about my degree. If anything, I’ve learned so much that is applicable to the patient population that we treat. PS: USC is CCNE accredited and is definitely NOT cheaper in price, neither is Duke or Vanderbilt. If you plan to stay in California, New York, or Illinois — then CCNE is recognized.

My dear...you probably got through the worst part already! So, the worst for me was the practicum before the capstone...because of the pandemic! As you know public health...well, requires you to be in “public” but with all the restrictions, it was difficult. My preceptor and clinic canceled on me because it became mandatory for any students (grad/undergrad) to not do any clinicals (still the case here in California for most places). So, everything was virtual, but my professor was sooooo supportive and my mentor/preceptor too. I think you’ll be fine as long as you can address a need for a community in an online platform. I chose an educational presentation. I wasn’t able to partner with any organization to present it, so I built a website (wix.com) fo free (hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life).... From this class, I continued with the same subject for My capstone, so it was reevaluating and changing content/context based on community suggestions and comments. The final itself is an essay. You’ll have 4 hours to do it. As long as you stay within the guidelines of the new APA 7 ED, it should be fine. DM me if you have any other questions! I hope that this was helpful!

Buying a House on a Nurse's Income: How Do Nurses Afford $450,000+ Houses?
I believe it. My condo has increased in price by $200,000. But it’s isn’t worth that. It’s just the cost of living in California is so high. Property taxes are also high. For the price I paid, I could have purchased a house in Nevada with 3-4bedrooms, a backyard and a pool....((sigh)). The upside is...probably the most important thing keeping us in California is family and great weather!

Patient complaint - Did I mishandle this situation?
I think that you did a great job! It would be silly to wake a patient up for their next morphine dose if they are asleep (if you’re in that much pain, then you wouldn’t be able to sleep). You did all you can by offering an alternative, he refused and you even spoke with the on-call physician about his request for Percocet. I can only deduce that he is angry because he was not able to manipulate you into giving him more pain medication. If it’s “PRN”, then you’re not obligated to wake him up if he is asleep and didn’t ask for pain medication. Let him write his letter, you did all you can to care and advocate for him. Don’t second guess yourself. Don’t be afraid of this kinds of tactics because you know you did all you can. In my current practice, I have patients who put the timer on their phone for every 2-4 hours to get their PRN narcotics...it’s an addiction.

Buying a House on a Nurse's Income: How Do Nurses Afford $450,000+ Houses?
I live in LA, there is no way that there is even a single family home for less than $400,000.00 (2 bdr, 2 bath, garage, and small yard—if you’re lucky). Prior to the pandemic, we were a 2 income household. We purchased our condo about 10 years ago and it was a little under $300,000.00, not including the HOA fees. Granted, we don’t live in the best neighborhood...nor do we have a yard... but, it’s what we could afford at that time. With the current pandemic, it’s been a struggle because I am paying the mortgage by myself. I have considered moving to other states where the cost of living in not high... I think that as a first time home buyer, you can get a lower down payment percentage...it might help to look at what is within your budget. I know that I don’t live in a big house or have a backyard, pool etc. but we’ve been very happy here. Later on down the road, we can always use the equity to send our children to college...

Going rate for preceptors?
Hmm...I didn’t even know that preceptors are paid. I know that there are companies that “match” you up with preceptors and the cost depends on the area. I live in the Los Angeles City/County and had trouble with preceptorship when I was completing my MSN last year. However, this year, I just asked a hospitalist that I have worked with for many years to have him precept me (he has his own family practice, urgent care, and plastic clinic). So, I think in that regard, I got very lucky. I think you should ask around if anyone knows of any MD willing to take preceptees (you’re basically working for free for them). Good luck!

Maybe a little late to comment....I completed the RN to MSN program from 2017 to 2020. My specialty is public health. Please ask any questions! Honestly, it all boils down to formatting, APA is another language in itself—so even if your content is amazing, if the format is not APA, you will not get a good grade.
