As a non-nursing undergrad- will taking non-prereqs as pass/fail weaken my application?

Published

Hi,

I am taking chemistry and stats this semester as prereqs for an ABSN/accelerated nursing program that I plan on applying to in the future. I am also taking a computer science and art course this semester. My theory is that if i take Computer science and art as pass/fail, I will be able to get a higher grade in chemistry and stats. If i take computer science and art for a grade, then i will get a lower final grade in chem and stats.

If i take cs and art as pass/fail, will nursing schools look down on that when they see my transcript? Or do they tend to focus more on my prereq grades than grades in other classes?

Thank you!

I think they consider the whole package, computer science, while possible not pre req....I think will help you a lot....... Let me give you some "old fissile advice".... Work at each coorifice to your maximum potential........regardless what it is..... If I had followed that advise in the 60-70s, I would probably be a 4decades physician, rather than a 4+decades diploma RN,...... Don't get me wrong, I have had a wonderful nursing carrer, varied critical care positions, HN, ER supvisor, director, and DON......I love nursing and am grateful at 67.5yrs, I'm still working and contributing.......however, if I had of made college more of a conquist, my position in health care delivery might have been from a different level...... In 2003 I thought I wanted to take a break from nursing, I truly did not know I could be an "A" student, I did a two year assoc.science program in resp. Therapy ...I made it interesting in competing with myself to make A's......when it came to EKG course, I raised the bar to ace that course with 100% avg of 100..... I did........but heck I had been cv nurse decades .....when, I made grades, a game, of trying to do the best I could, and it did take commitment and effort.......I found out I could be an "A" student.......just keep focus.....congratulations, best wishes, and hurry up, us Ole, fossils need some rest...... ))smiles((

It depends on the admissions practices of the particular school -- and any biases that individual members of the admissions committee might have. You cannot predict that.

Will pass/fail non-pre-req classes hurt you? No, they are neutral. They help get the required credits, but do not help or hurt your GPA. If you are worried about your GPA being high enough, then take them for credit and strive for As. If you are not worried about your GPA, then it can only hurt you by lowering your GPA with Bs or Cs. Many people test out of the required pre-req courses (ie. Math). Those credits are not used in the calculation of their GPA. Schools accept those credits without issues.

You should ask your advisor. They will have the best insight to the admission board. GL!
