As GVN waiting on license, what can I do?

Published

I recently graduated from school and got my GVN in Texas. Took my nclex and passed at 85 questions. I still am not listed on the BNE and have not received license in mail. What am I allowed to do at work? Can I work as a nurse? Do I have to have some one right with me at all times? Will a nurse on one hall while I am on another be okay? I don't want to jeopardize my license. I will be working in LTCF with 24 pts. and one aide on 10-6 shift, what can I expect. HELP, I start monday night.

When did you take the exam?

You need to read the description of what you can and can not do on the BON website. I understand that you are beginnig work on Monday, but what type of orientation are you expected to have? You should not just be given a hall, and thrown to the wolves without a proper orientation...........if so, run as fast as you can from there.

You are right, your license is at stake............

I took the nclex on the 25th. I read on the BNE and it didn't say much. I will have 3 days of orientation and then will be on my own. The DON lives at the facility and said she would be there any time I need her. I am really nervous and don't really know what all I am allowed to do.

Specializes in Vents, Telemetry, Home Care, Home infusion.

:eek: Three days of orientation isn't enough for an experienced LVN/RN yet alone a new grad, especially if it's long term care----so many rules and regulations!!!!!

I'd check out other employment options in your area.

I would also look for other work, your license is on the line here.

Specializes in LTC, med-surg, critial care.

When I was a GVN (three and half weeks between the day I took my test and when I got my license) I was allowed to do the following:

* chart

* write orders in physicans orders, TX book, and MAR

* fax MD

* fax pharmacy

All of these had to have an LVN's signature behind mine (like in school)

* learn all the paper work and procedures (incident reports, lab orders, decub books, dietary orders, social services request, TX orders, med orders, ect) Thankfully I had an LVN that was willing to give me a copy of everything with instructions written on them. I have them in a folder and take it with me when I work so I don't forget anything.

* walk with an LVN as s/he did a med pass (I would tell him/her what meds were to be given as s/he looked over my shoulder making sure I didn't miss anything)

* go through med carts, look for meds needing a refill, pull the sticker and put together the fax sheet

* Dig through treatment cart and get aquainted with everything. Pull out all items nessisary for the LVN to do a treatment. This let me get familiar with each treatment.

* I filied a lot of old MAR/TX sheets when I had absolutly nothing else to do.

If you aren't already familiar with the residents get to know them. I was a CNA in my facility through the last part of nursing school so not only can I put a face to the name I also have their routine down. I know where to find Mr. Jones at three in the afternoon, I know where everyone eats dinner and where they like to wander off to when they leave their room. Makes the med pass faster when you can say "101B isn't here or the lobby so she's probably in activities watching a movie. I'll catch her when I'm on that end of the building" rather than hunt one person down before moving on.

Good heavens! You start on Monday??? What is your orientation schedule?? I hope it is more than just a few days!

She states that it was only three days.......that is why we suggested that she look for other work. That is totally inappropriate.
