My girlfriend and I are getting ready to start our BSN program together. We are both wanting to be an Army Nurse when we graduate. One thing that separates us is that she has a criminal record from 5 years ago. I told her that she needed to talk to a health care recruiter and they could asnwer the question for her but she insists that she can get a wavier.
I think that she is really setting herself up for disappointment. Anyway, have you heard of them doing waviers for past criminal records? I am thinking no
Anyway, I just feel bad and thought I'd ask - if anything for my own peace of mind because I think she is going to end up very disappointed.

Depends on what the record is for...As an officer, you must hold a clearance. A minimum of SECRET. I have a friend in recruiting. If you need more info on it, PM me.

There were 2 nurses at MEPS with me that got DQd (disqualified) right out of the gates due to criminal record. Whether they received waivers I'm not sure of because they were completely stopped and sent back to their recruiters. Doesn't sound good for your girlfriend. Best bet is to call a medical recruiter and make that your first question. They will know right away and let you know if it's even possible to get waivers. Good luck!
Your friend also needs to call the Board to ensure she can get a license. I know about someone doing 4 yrs of college just to find out after graduation that they could not get a license d/t their record.

Even your girlfriend can get a waiver, one might not be granted because of how competitive it is right now to get in.

Armyicu-Good point. I knew someone that was unable to obtain a license as well. The school that I went to about halfway through the program requested everyone to have a criminal background check before starting clinicals to hopefully catch this before it starts.

It would be beneficial to your quest for information if we had some idea of what she did....plus I LOVE a good story
