Army Nursing Board question

Published

Hello all, long time reader, first time poster. I'm your dime-a-dozen New Grad BSN nurse still looking for a job a year after graduation, and I've been really considering joining the Army Nurse Corps. I spoke to a health care recruiter today and got the ball rolling. But I had one of those moments where you realize a question hours after the opportunity. So I figured i'd ask here. Realistically speaking, what are the chances I will not be accepted by the Board in October, with my standard "No RN work experience", 3.1 GPA, and barely making the physical requirements? Not being employed and with loans and parents breathing down ones back makes for many sleepless nights. I don't like the uncertainty. I plan on picking up a part time job just to make ends meet. But if I don't get accepted in October, i'll be burning even more borrowed time. And still with no RN job. I'm simply at a loss and quite stressed out. Thanks for the ear, -Iris223

Your chance for acceptence is as strong as your will to be part of the armed forces. If your heart isn't in this it will shine in your interview and when you speak to your recruiter. The application process is long. If you want this for more than just a job you won't have any problem. Start running 3 times a week. Learn all you can about the military. It's a different way of life. What makes you really want to join the army? As for wasting time during application process, no one says you can't get a part time or full time job while applying. The army will take you with or without experience. Good luck it' a major decision.

Hello,

Did you say October as an acceptance date based on current fiscal year recruiting numbers or?

Even if accepted in Oct bear in mind at that point you gain a letter of acceptance and later a future date of scheduled schooling ie when you and pay will start.

No experience isn't the issue at all - they aren't necessarily looking for experienced RNs... that is what the majority of nurse accessions will be... just like every other job in the Army they have base requirements for entry and then they train you / tailor you to the Army focus of that job.

Like Irish said - have a reason for the military, for service, for the Army - better not be a purely personal / centric interest in steady income, retirement.. but rather patriotism, care for Soldiers, to be part of a larger mission etc.

The process is long for application / acceptance ... you can apply prior to graduation so that is why I was asking why the delay .. yup if was due to fulfilled recruiting quoto then I get it.. but make sue your recruiter and you do the pre-screen of your app and polish it up NOW as opposed to submitting in OCT and realizing an error was there and then having to cont' the wait until following months.

best of luck.

and barely making the physical requirements?

Are we talking health history or a weight issue?

My advice: at this point, don't turn down any full time gigs on off chance the military will take you.

I am still in nursing school I really dont know that much about the military. Can y'all give my as much info as you can. I dont pass the physical requirements, but I am working on that ends (how much of a problem would this be if I still dont qualify?) And can you join with out any actual nursing experience.

Search the boards & branch websites; if you have questions after that, search on the specific question as most of the questions you'll have, have already been asked and answered elsewhere.

If you don't "qualify" physically, you won't be allowed to join: unlike civilian society, physical fitness is considered a key component which you are judged by in military service. To the point that careers have been ended for failing to maintain within physical standards even after accession.

Depending on the route you choose: yes, you can join without experience.
