Army--Choosing first duty station

Go to bragg....it's a single woman's paradise. Not to far from the beach or the mountains, DC is a short jaunt as well as Charelston, and there is no shortage of men.

So, I have finally sent in my application to be an Army nurse! I know as a new nurse I will have to choose from one of the 9 major medical centers. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on any of them for me as I am cluless to them all. I will be mid-twenties and single when I go. I'm thinking that on my wish list maybe NC will be my #1, but could def. use some help!! Any info would be great!! Thanks!!!

Hey there! Congrats on turning in your application! It was a big step for me as well! My app is going before the board tomorrow, so I'm praying that all goes well! I was in the same position as you and I narrowed down my choices based on what experience I was looking to get out of it. So, my choices are Hawaii, Washington State, and GA. I'm the same as you being single with no kids, and in my mid 20's, so I chose Hawaii b/c I thought that would be a great opportunity that may not come up again. Which bases are you considering? Do you want to be close to family/friends?

You might also want to consider choosing a location which also holds the specialty course you would like to take... already being there might make getting your seat in the course easier and faster when the time comes

Thanks for your help. Renee4Christ seems like your in the same boat! I turned everything in, but haven't heard yet when my app. will go before the board. When are you planning on going to OBLC?? I'm still thinking NC, but possibly also GA. I only have family in MA so it would be hard to be close anywhere. I'm looking for an adventure..so anywhere would be good. I guess I have to wait a little to out in my "wish list" so i'll continue to think about it.

I am in a course right now and the only 1 from the med ctr who is taking the course will be PCS when the course is done. So dont know if being at a med ctr that has the course will help since AMEDD assigns who & when you go to the course.

Yep, I'm right along there with you! I think the board meets twice a month so maybe your recruiter is preparing your's for later this month... you really have to stay on them, I know I did and I still do!!!! I graduate nursing school next May, so I am hoping I can go to the August OBLC since I hear they aren't offering the July class this year. If you want an adventure, join me in Hawaii!!!!!! Lol... I hear NC is a great assignment and there is ALOT of military there as well as GA. I hope I get Hawaii, if not Ft. Lewis is next on my list, so we will see! Are you still in school now? How much longer do you have?

Yeah, I'm trying to keep on top of everything, but I have to admit, my recruiter has been really great so far. I will also be graduating in May 2010 and hope to go to OBLC in August (even though, being from MA I am terrified of that heat). I just told my recruiter today that NC will be my top choice, so we'll see. Now, just the wait..and i'm anxious for this last year of school to be done already!
