30+ Armed forces nursing

Published

Hi all. I'm a 30 year old RN (ASN) looking to join the military as a nurse. I'm aiming for mental health, since that's where the bulk of my experience lies. I need to spend the next year getting into the physical shape to pull this off, so I have lots of time to research in the meantime.

I've mainly been looking at AF, but their website is so terribly non-specific that I'm having trouble finding good info. The army and navy websites were even worse.

Does anyone have a link to better resources? Any info would be great, as I'm in the daydreaming/planning stage right now.

You will need a BSN for active duty. There is information on the Army website for contacting a healthcare (AMEDD) recruiter: http://www.goarmy.com/locate-a-recruiter.html

The Army site also has information on the Nurse Corps specialties and requirements: http://www.goarmy.com/amedd/army-health-care-corps/nurse/careers.html

The website does say that the Reserves will take RNs with ADNs, but that is probably going to change to BSN, if it hasn't already -- there are a lot of nurses trying to get into the military these days, more applicants than slots.

Well bummer. Thanks for the info!

Maybe not a roadblock, but a speedbump? :) Besides the physical fitness, you could also spend the next year working on your BSN -- there are tons of RN-BSN completion programs that could help you reach your goals.

And welcome to allnurses!

True, but school is a mighty big speedbump financially with a wife and child to support. This will take time to process lol
