NAU BSN spring 2018

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hi, everyone! I thought I'd start this thread to connect with anyone applying to the NAU BSN program for the spring 2018 semester. I'm only applying to the Tucson program, but feel free to share your campus preferences and any advice, questions, stats, etc. Thanks! Looking forward to hearing from fellow applicants! Thanks, guys!

@rilslay, I wouldn't worry too much about having courses in progress. Your Kaplan/GPA are really good. The advisor in Tucson told me that someone was accepted last semester with 3 courses in progress.

@Sabbysabby, is it 170 for the Flagstaff program only, or 170 total applications received across all campuses?

I hope we don't have to wait too long either! @rislay I also have one class in progress, I think a lot of people do! Does having classes in progress make a difference in your app?

@miam0, I found this comment in the NAU Nursing Fall 2016 forum:

"1) First, they look at just your PREREQUISITES GPA (not overall college GPA)..They base it off of a point system:

3.0-3.19=1 point

3.2-3.39=2 points

3.4-3.59=3 points

3.6-3.79=4 points

3.8-4.0=5 points

2) Next they look at your KAPLAN Scores.. and they weigh the points based on the averages for the application cycle..(Usually anything over a 90 gets you 5 points, but it depends on the cycle)

I was told that you have to at least score a 65%-70% on the science portion to be considered. (But again, it depends what the average test scores were for your application cohort)

3) They look at how many of the prerequisite classes that you have in progress or completed.

For example.. if you apply with all of the prerequisites complete you get the full points for that section which is 2 points I believe.

4) These are kind of like "bonus points":

- If you are an NAU student with +30 credits you get an extra point +1

- If you have any 60 college credits completed with a 3.0 GPA or higher then you get an extra point too +1"

The current admissions criteria is identical so it's probably still mostly accurate, but I can't say for sure. I was told by the advisor in Tucson that Kaplan scores are looked at before GPA, so that's a little contradictory to this post. It might also be something unique to Tucson? The person who posted this said she received the information directly from an advisor in Flagstaff.

Anyway, I hope this helps!

Oh okay I actually remember seeing this comment! Although I remember seeing another comment saying that was not accurate, so who knows! I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Thanks :)

This actually isn't entirely true! The GPA is worth 5 points, and the Kaplan is worth 10 points! You get a maximum of 5 points from the science portion and 5 points from the overall! Then there are 2 points for having all your classes complete with .2 off your total score for each class IP, and then 1 point if you completed all of your prerequisites at NAU! My counselor and I just discussed this! I believe it is out of 18 points!

Oh okay thanks that's really helpful! My biggest concern is my science score :( I just really overthought a lot of the questions because I studied so hard for them! I met the minimum requirement but it was my lowest score of all subjects.

@rilslay, thanks for clearing that up! That fits with what the advisor in Tucson told us in our information session.

Does anyone know when we're supposed to hear back? I see in the past it was early November when people got their notifications and I wasn't sure if that was still the case. I'm just too excited to know!!

I applied to Tucson campus, second time and super nervous! My KAPLAN was only an 88 (the writing portion always gets me for some reason)

Did anyone apply anywhere else?

It's supposed to be 12 more days at the latest!

Really?!

Oh my goodness! I hope i hear tomorrow as i refresh my email religiously!

I was looking at your gpa and kaplan, it looks like youve got a really good chance! Best of luck!

I broke down and called the nursing office last week. The person I spoke to said we should know by this Friday. Fingers crossed!

I'm not sure just heard the news from a friend about the 170 applicants. @SoyKayDub. I hope we know by friday! I'm so excited and nervous. I really hope we get in.
