CHM 130 on RIO advice?

Hello! I am new here and exploring nursing as the next chapter in my life. I am debating taking Chemistry 130 on the net through Rio. I would like to take BIO 201 this summer and get myself on the wait list after that, by July. I have taken a few other classes through Rio before and notice that generally it is lots of busy work and tough exams. I wanted to see what your experiences were with this class and whether you wish you had taken it in person. I never did Chemistry in h.s.

Thanks!

To be honest I had started this class through RIO and had to drop it. For me science classes are too hard online. I need the one on one interaction with the instructor and students.

Overall I am very disappointed by the Rio Salado system. The instructors I have had give you no notes and never really answer your questions or give constructive feedback. It works for some classes but Chemistry is a little more involved.

I hear ya.. I had to retake GLG 110 because of their ridiculous policy and insane midterms and exams... I just saw that no summer 2 classes will be offered and I am trying to get pre-reqs done asap.... A little last minute career change! =]

Thanks for the advice- I needed a dosage of reality..... If I didn't do well in one science class through Rio, I probably won't do well in another.... =] good luck! Thanks again!:bowingpur

I've gone back & forth on taking science classes with Rio. I was going to take it last year but ended up dropping it before the class even started. I just signed up again & start CHM130 in a few weeks. I need to finish the pre-reqs asap & taking it in person is not an option due to my work schedule & kids. I hope I pass since I never took chem in hs.

I have taken CHM130 through Rio, in the 8 week accelerated version. Online is not for everyone, it is tougher than doing the class in person. You have to be disciplined and want it bad enough. Rio does offer tutors, and they are helpful, the instructor I had was great about answering questions and trying to help as much as possible. He always responded to my emails, whenever I had questions.

Good Luck

I took Chm130 through Rio a few years back and earned an A. However I didn't work (SAHM to four preschoolers) so had the time to devote to it.....somewhat, lol. I spent 20+ hours each week on the course, and it was my only course. It helped tremendously that I am excellent at math. In fact, it is crucial, I would say, to learning it on your own.

If you aren't good with math, I would highly suggest taking the course in person.

Hi there. It sounds like you & I are on the same boat. :) I am actually taking CHM130 from Rio right now but am hoping to take BIO201 this summer if all goes well. For me, I take in more information by reading & writing than listening so self-guided online format really works for me. I think it totally depends on your learning style. I never took Chem in HS but with lots of review & practice time, I'm learning a lot and I think it's safe to say that I actually like chemistry, which is a huge step up from being afraid of the thought of taking chemistry. I am also taking BIO156 (from Phoenix College online), I have 4 kids in 4 different schools and I'm a director for a non-profit organization. If I can do it... you can too! :) I am taking the midterm tomorrow... I guess I will have to let you know how that goes.. then make my recommendations. :)

Good luck!

Good Luck on your midterm... I am taking my midterm this week for BIO201, I am taking this online as well, along with MAT122, my last 2 pre-reqs. I like the online classes, especially for the non-traditional students. When you have to work and take care of a family the online classes make it conveinent to go to school. My only complaint, is the essay's, even though I am a really good writer, and have always excelled in writing, it is tough to write essays in biology and chemistry, without any reference material during the midterm and final.

Hi all,

I've read through most of the Rio threads about the science courses and am not looking forward to taking classes through them (but I have to because I live in the middle of nowhere). Can anyone message me with advice as to who they liked as a CHM130 instructor (or who to steer clear of)? Thanks so much.

Formereducator:

I am signed up to take CHM 130 through Phoenix college this fall... The lecture part is online and the instructor was highly recommended by a classmate, she said the instructor really explains it and makes it "fun"...

The only problem I am finding is that the lecture is the only thing that is online, you would still have to do a lab.... It might be worthwhile to see if you can do lecture at PC and lab through Rio... good luck!!

I checked out rate my professor.com and none of the proffessors teaching chm 130 in the fall are listed on it... Good luck!!

Hmmm, that's an interesting idea...lecture through Phoenix College and lab through Rio. I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the idea.
