ARE YOU SCARED TO SARS £¿

Am I afraid I might get SARS. Just a little tiny bit. I am perfectly aware I am more likely to die of cancer or a heart attack than SARS.

I live in Ontario Canada and work in an ICU.

I am not afraid of SARS. I go to Toronto on a regular basis and I can tell you the media reports are most definitely out of control. Hopefully things will calm down and people can see this in a more realistic light. At least in terms of North America. I do think Sars is here to stay, to some degree.

I want to tell people again, no one is wearing masks in Toronto, unless they work in a hospital, or are lead down the garden path by the media and have been taken in by fear and ignorance. Sars is not in the community in Toronto..it remains in the health care setting.

It is said that there many people be ill with SARS in Canada

Why people are not wearing masks in Toronto?

Hi a-rose, glad to see you again! :D

As far as SARS goes, yes, I am concerned about it to a point. Am I AFRAID of it? Not yet-- it isn't a big problem here in my part of the world. I think if I lived in Beijing and Guangdong, I would probably be frightened of it.

One of the reasons I am concerned about it is that I am right in the middle of reading a book on the 1918 Spanish Influenza titled "Flu" by Gina Kolata. 21 MILLION people died in that pandemic; and now ChainedChaos states "that the mortality rate is 4.5%, the Spanish flu of 1918 was 2.5%". Maybe we SHOULD start being concerned about SARS!

I started to read this book the week before SARS hit the evening news; I'm half way through it but put it down once SARS hit Toronto.

Yes, I guess I AM afraid of SARS, come to think of it! Modern medicine gives us a very false sense of security here in the USA, I think.

There are about 210 cases in Toronto and many are suspect, ... and many are not ill, just showing symptoms of respiratory illnesses. As you know, there are no tests to confirm SARS, so contact is the big issue.

The reason that no one (other than health care professionals) are wearing masks is this.... It is not in the community. To date there have been no cases that involve casual community contact. ALL CASES can be traced back to the orignial case ( which was a direct result of travel).

Unless you work in an affected hospital or a SARS screening clinic or an emerg department where potential patients may present themselves there is no reason to wear a mask. Simple as that.

Toronto is a large Canadian city but it does not represent Canada. It is like saying, New York City has a SARS case so why aren't people in Arizona wearing masks..... Canada is a large geographic area with the population of California. About 23 million people.
