So I was doing my class prep about headaches for my nursing class today when I was struck with the realization that my history of "abnormal migraines" is actually cluster headaches! I was so excited since my headaches never really fit the migraine symptoms and the description of cluster headaches was like reading off my symptoms (always behind my left eye, about 40 minutes in duration, intense pain, same time of day, a bunch for a few weeks then nothing, etc). My husband thinks I such a goofball for being so excited about this. So I got to thinking, have any of you come across a diagnosis that made all the pieces of the puzzle suddenly fall into place for you, so to speak?
And yes, I will go to my doctor about this. I'm not actually self-diagnosing...
Right now we're doing lots of lectures on mental health disorders. Not only have I diagnosed myself with many psych problems, I've diagnosed several of my family members as well! One of our instructors remarked to us that the majority of nursing and med students end up thinking they have whatever disorder they happen to be studying at the time.
I had a roommate who was a nursing student, and she totally did that. While doing the OB rotation, she thought she was pregnant. While on the psych rotation, she thought she needed to be institutionalized. I was taking a class in abnormal psych at the time, and I diagnosed not only her, but also my other friends, family, and even myself!
I think I've diagnosed myself with major depression, panic disorder, general anxiety disorder, dysthymia, bipolar I AND II, lupus, anemia, hypothyroid, peptic ulcer, hallucinations, renal calculi, and pneumonia. The pneumonia one was really scary because I ended up being right, which only reinforced all the other ones.
Right now, I'm tempted to diagnose myself with amotivational syndrome. Summer is coming...dear Lord, I need this break sooooo bad.
For anyone else in a BSN program: which year was the hardest? My BSN includes three years of nursing school, and this one (junior) is supposed to be the most difficult.
