Are we "semi-professionals"

Published

Today I was filling out a survey. Under the occupation section I immediately scanned for "professional"

Boy was I startled to see these first 2 options:

•professional (eg doctor, accountant)

•semi-professional (eg nurse, technician)

ummm what?!?! 😡😡😡 so frustrating to not be viewed as a professional when I have a bachelors degree, a speciality certificate, and 7 years experience not to mention a specialised knowledge and skill set for my PROFESSION of nursing!

Specializes in Med/Surg/ICU/Stepdown.

New York State (as seen above) is one state that refers to their RNs as Registered Professional Nurses. My ID badge at work actually has that title beneath my name and RN credentials.

By those definitions, hospitalists are also not professionals.

Specializes in ICU.

You know, I might actually agree with that considering the caliber of most of the hospitalists I have dealt with...

Only sort of kidding.

Specializes in Med/Surg, OR, Peds, Patient Education.
we sure as h%%^& aren't treated as professionals.

We are not, or in my case as I am retired, were not treated as professional by hospital management. Hospital CEOs and other management regarded us as chattel. However, most of our patients thought of us as both professional and knowledgeable . Most, albeit not all, patients appreciated and respected our expertise and the excellent care they received, as well as the education that we imparted to them.
