Are all CNAs mean

Published

I just started clincials at a LTC and the first day the CNAs look at me and the other lpn students drity and nasty. They made rude comments and was bossy. Some act like they know everyhthing and hate to me wrong and don't forget they are mean and rude to the residents. Why are CNAs like this is due to lack of education? Are they not happy with their self or job? I thought nursing was bout team work and doing what is best for the patient..

Specializes in LTC.

My facility is not a clinical site, so I haven't really dealt with any student nurses at my facility (aside from coworkers that are IN nursing school) but I can see how certain ones could be annoying, and I can tell you that for me personally, jealousy has nothing to do with it. I'm in school for something else so I'm not looking at their nursing degree like it's something I want for myself.

But I find it completely irritating when people make assumptions like the ones you made in your original post (CNAs are uneducated and unhappy). It is obvious from your post that you look down on CNAs, and they can probably sense it from you.

I don't think anyone meant to belittle anyone working as a CNA -at all. I definitely wouldn't take it personally. Most of us know that CNAs work very hard and that's something commendable in itself. I suppose that we're all entitled to an opinion, since it is a discussion thread, and yours counts just as much as the next. With that in mind, what would yousoldtheworld consider the reason for the animosity of the "mean" CNA?

As I said before, said CNA could just be a jerk in general, could have been having a bad day, could have been rubbed the wrong way by the students, or could have been just fine and been misinterpreted, any number of reasons that a person of any type could come off as "mean". I don't go out on the street and meet a real ****** wearing Adidas shoes and then go home and ask someone "Is everyone who wears Adidas shoes mean??"

Thank you, fuzzy, this last paragraph is exactly what I've been trying to say. If you're voicing these assumptions to us, it's very likely that you're making them pretty clear in your actions.

And frankly, if you're going to go onto a board full of CNAs and post a thread with this title, you should expect annoyed replies.

I personally have known more CNAs to be less than professional, than any other way unfortunately. As a CNA you can't change the world, but you can be sure that everything you do is completed to the best of your ability. They're the voice for the patient/resident/client and need to be accurate in their work. There are characteristics of any profession that show others that you actually care about your career. Whether you're a CNA, LPN or RN...it takes a team. More so in a LTC environment. I've met LPNs and RNs alike with downright nasty personalities. Some people just like to argue and be confrontational.

Well, I'm sorry that's been your experience, but it's not everyone's. Where I work, the vast majority of the staff are personable. Yes, everyone has their days, but in general, of our 40 or so aides employed where I work, there are generally only 2 or 3 that would generally be considered "nasty". And all but one end up being pretty nice once you get to know them, and are just rough around the edges. CNA is just a job, it's not a personality characteristic.

If you are at a place where most of the aides truly do seem to be hateful, it makes me wonder how they are treated, frankly.

Maybe it is the fact that CNAs have upwards to 20 patients and nurses expect them to take care of everything besides passing meds. When I'm at my clinicals I usually end up learning more from the CNAs rather than the RNs. So try to help them as much as possible and you can learn a lot from them.

Being a CNA is a very demanding job, physically and mentally. However, there is never an excuse to treat patients like ****. I'm a CNA and I can't wait to start nursing school, for several reasons one of being because I'm burnt out as a CNA. I've seen nurses who I trained as a CNA and are now nurses, but act like jerks once they became nurses. Its sometimes a hard pill to swallow. More often than not, I have a pre-conceived notion that most of the nurses I come across are just mean and demeaning people. I really don't want to excuse the CNAs for being mean however.

I'm also a CNA but I don't treat our patients like crap. It's a really demanding job and thank god i have nurses who know what teamwork means. =) everytime we have nursing students on the floor i'm so happy because they help us with bed baths, ambulation, positioning, and even commode requests. I let them do it because this is how they learn in fundamentals. While i did my fundamentals before, one LVN taught me a lot of stuff about patients which i'm telling other nursing students doing their clinical in our dept. Mean and nasty CNA's probably hate their work and just too tired of doing all the dirty stuff for their nurses and they just can't leave their job because it's hard to get another job nowadays. *too bad....CNA students should really think if that kind of workload is really what they want, if not, then get another healthcare profession.

It's just your imagination, dear. Because when we have nursing students on the floor, I have better things to do than give you all dirty looks.

Once you finish nursing school you'll realize there are people who don't give a horse's butt about patients and they're just there for a paycheck.

But you'll also find that many of us CNAs care about our patients as much, if not more, than you do. We're not all cut from the same cloth. There are CNAs I work with who I would love to punch in the teeth. Then there are the wonderful ones who'll take the extra step so that a patient doesn't wait hours to have their call lights answered or their bottoms cleaned.
