Are Certified Nurse Midwives needed in ky?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi I am currently enrolled in a BSN program that starts this fall. I want to obtain my bachelor's degree, and I want to continue with my education to either do the Nurse practitioner program or CNM. I just checked for jobs hiring cnms in my area, and I didn't see any. Are they not in demand? Would I be better off doing the NP program? I'm just scared that it's going to doctorate level. Any help?

Thanks

If you mean Kentucky, yes we could use them. the University of Kentucky is the only hospital in Lexington not using them and they are finally caving in and starting to use them. They are hiring CNMs now for labor and delivery. Also Lexington has a large number of "crunchy" moms who prefer midwives and/or home birthing.

You can also teach as a CNM, one of my instructors is a CNM.

Specializes in Cardiac Nursing.

I think the more rural areas use them more, I could be wrong. The Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing might actually have more information. http://www.frontierschool.edu/ They are the first school of Midwifery in KY. I researched them as I too want to someday be a NP. Not necessarily a CNM...I don't know yet.
