I wonder if there is anyone out there who, like me, who has been slogging through the NMC application process and has taken or will take the OSCE? Are any of you ANGRY about the OSCE? I am.
Those of us applying to be registered in the UK have been put through the ringer, been vetted in every way imaginable (references, one year of practical experience required, education hours, training hours, IELTS, etc), and the fact that they add a practical test on top of that is just redundant, unnecessary, and a huge waste of time and resources for everyone. Especially amid the UK nursing shortage, when they should be facilitating the immigration of well-qualified nurses, not hindering us!
I recently took the OSCE and failed the skills section for absolutely bogus and arbitrary reasons. But before finding out that I had a "partial fail", I initially came out of that test feeling confident, like I had done well, and there is no way they would judge me to be an incompetent nurse. But despite my feeling that I performed well, I also emerged from the test simultaneously angry and frustrated, for having just committed 5 weeks of my life to stressing, floundering through disorganized, overabundant study materials on the Nile website, and traveling across the world... all for a test that clearly has nothing to do with assessing a nurse's competence. All the OSCE succeeds in testing is our willingness to jump through meaningless hoops and pay excessive fees!
The fact that we are subjected to this psychological roller coaster is infuriating... especially from an organization whose bedrock is the holistic caretaking of all people!
And why the exorbitant fees? Why do we have to repay the fee if we sit again for the test? Exactly whose pockets are we lining? The whole thing just rubs me the wrong way.
I'm just appalled at what I and others have been through with the OSCE. I plan to appeal my test result and also lodge a complaint both with the University of Northampton and the NMC, who are the controllers of the OSCE. If anyone is interested, I will share what I write, and I encourage ANYONE who is frustrated to write to the NMC and make yourself heard!!!
In my case, I just took my CBT for the second time and failed again. I'm going to stop already at this point. It's not our loss, but THEIRS. It's just money, money can be earned again. But the trust in this whole UK process, it can never be regained anymore. Someday, the NMC is going to experience karma for treating health care professionals this way. I've been hearing some stories from doctors who came from the UK who transferred to the Middle East that indeed the NMC or the NHS (or whatever it's called) is going down, down, down. *evil laugh* I'm sorry, it just serves them right! Even the doctors who already work there are migrating!
Even when I was only about to take the CBT only, I've been reading the comments for OSCE already to see an overview of the future if ever I reach that stage. And boy, even until the final stage, the NMC are BULLIES!
Here's a virtual hug to those who were also victimized by this money making scam. Let's all move forward to countries who would generously embrace our passion.
For now, I'm gonna relax, watch all the Korean dramas I missed because of all the UK prepping, then start anew for 2017. Goodbye UK! Hello to other opportunities!

It truly is ridiculous, from what I heard the NHS is going down. I am going to take the OSCE again for the 3rd time and they will deduct it from my paycheck. If I cant make it the 3rd time then Im gonna quit and find much bigger opportunities from other countries. Everything is really annoying when you know that you are a good nurse and yet you failed because of the slightest things.

Yes, listen to what your heart says. If you still want to go through it the third time, then go for it, if you pass then terrific. Then if not, there are absolutely no regrets because you just gave your all. I had been through the process of DABDA while prepping for the second take, so when I failed again, I was at the point of acceptance that it really wasn't for me. Maybe God has another greater plan. I always believe that if it is for me, then He will give it effortlessly and gracefully. If not, no matter how many hoops I have to jump, He will close that door for me. Listen to your instinct and always trust His plans! God is greater than all these CBT, OSCE failures.
Exams are not the absolute yardstick of being an excellent nurse, but practice is. In other countries, we don't have to pay to be assessed for our skills, they hire us and pay us training allowance instead. Imagine 1000 pounds on the first take, then another 1,000 pounds for a full resit. That's a whopping 124,800 pesos, I could have travelled, taken a more fair & reasonable exam in another country, watched a concert with that money! Major red flag alert.

Most provinces in Canada require IENs to go through some form of assessment and for many they have to do courses costing several thousands of dollars Canadian before being allowed to sit the national exam which is now NCLEX for RN. The process is long and expensive starting with NNAS. UK may also be expensive but other countries are expecting something similar these days.

Yes, it's not only in the UK where the testing fees are so expensive, so I'm just eyeing to go back to the Middle East, I'm much more familiar with the ins and outs there as I used to work in the KSA.
Hi Andrei15! My partner is on the same boat as you are. He just received his results from the OSCE re-sit and it's a full fail. I heard news of Filipino nurses sent home because of their trusts' agreement with the home office that they need to pass the OSCE within 6 months however in your case, your trust was able to do something about that, hence I badly needed your advice on what to do. We're desperate now of what lies ahead.
Is OXFORD Brookes better testing site compared with University of Northampton since they monopolized the OSCE scene for quite a while now. I do hope that this new testing sites are more considerate than UoN. Im also in a dilemma right now of pushing my application or not. To add, I am currently waiting for my DL. This OSCE news really makes me think if it is really a good move to go to UK considering that I dont have that enough money to pay the trust if ever I will fail the OSCE.
